Introduction to Surah ASH-SHUARA (THE POETS) with Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi- Tafhim al-Qur'an - The Meaning of the Qur'an

Name

The Surah takes its name from verse 224 in which the word Ash-Shu`araa’ occurs.

Period of Revelation

The subject matter and the style show, and the traditions confirm, that it was revealed during the middle Makkan period. According to Ibn Abbas, Surah Ta Ha was revealed first, then Surah Al Waqiah, and then Surah Ash-Shu’araa. About Surah Ta Ha it is well known that it had been revealed before Hadrat Umar embraced Islam.

Subject Matter and Topics

The background of the Surah is that the disbelievers of Makkah were persistently refusing, on one pretext or the other, to accept the message of Islam given by the Holy Prophet. Sometimes they would say that he did not show them any sign to convince them of his Prophethood; sometimes they would brand him as a poet or a sorcerer and mock his message; and sometimes they would ridicule his Mission, saying that his followers were either a few foolish youth, or the poor people and slaves – whereas, they argued, if his Mission had really some value for the people, the nobles and the elders would have accepted it first. Thus, while on the one hand, the Holy Prophet was becoming wearied by his efforts to show them rationally the errors of their creeds and prove the truth of the Doctrines of Tauhid and the Hereafter, the disbelievers, on the other, were never tired of adopting one kind of obduracy after the other. This state of affairs was causing great anguish and grief to the Holy Prophet.

The Surah begins with words of consolation to the Holy Prophet, implying, “Why do you fret for their sake? If these people have not believed in you, it is not because they have not seen any Sign, but because they are obdurate. They will not listen to reason they want to see a Sign which makes them bow their heads in humility. When this Sign is shown in due course of time, they will themselves realize that what was being presented to them was the Truth.”

After this introduction, till verse 191, one and the same theme has been presented continuously, and it is said: “The whole earth abounds in such Signs as can guide a seeker after truth to Reality, but the stubborn and misguided people have never believed even after seeing the Signs, whether these were the Signs of the natural phenomena or the miracles of the Prophets. These wretched people have stubbornly adhered to their erroneous creeds till the Divine scourge actually overtook them.”
1. The Signs are of two kinds: (a) Those which are scattered all over the earth, and by seeing which an intelligent person can judge for himself whether what the Prophet is presenting is the Truth or not and (b) those which were seen by Pharaoh and his people, Noah’s people, the Ad and the Thamud, Lot’s people and the people of Aiykah. Now it is for the disbelievers to decide which kind of the Signs they are eager to see.
2. The mentality of the disbeliever has been the same throughout the ages; their arguments and their objections, and their excuses and subterfuges for not believing have been similar and ultimately the fates that they met have also been the same. Likewise, the Prophets in every age presented the same teachings, their personal character and their reasoning and arguments against their opponents were the same, and they were all similarly blessed with mercy by Allah Almighty. Both these patterns of behavior and conduct are found in history, and the disbelievers could themselves see as to which respective patterns they and the Holy Prophet belonged.
3. Allah is All Mighty, All Powerful and All Merciful at the same time. History contains instances of His Wrath as well as of His Mercy. Now, therefore, it is for the people to decide whether they would like to deserve Allah’s Mercy or His Wrath.
4. Lastly, the discussion has been summed up, saying “O disbelievers, if at all you want to see the Signs, why should you insist on seeing those horrible Signs that visited the doomed communities of the past? Why don’t you see the Qur’an which is being presented in your own language? Why don’t you see Muhammad (upon whom be Allah’s peace and mercy) and his Companions? Can the revelations of the Qur’an be the work of a satan or a jinn? Does the recipient of the Qur’an appear to be a sorcerer? Are Muhammad and his Companions no different from a poet and his admirers? Why don’t you give up disbelief and search your hearts for their judgment?

Bevezetés az Ash-Shuara (Költők) szúrához Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi - Tafhim al-Qur'an - A Korán Jelentése című munkája nyomán

Bevezetés az Ash-Shuara (Költők) Szúrához

Elnevezés

A Szúra a 224. versben elhangzó Költő szó után kapta elnevezését.

A kinyilatkoztatás ideje

A hitetleneken múlik, mely jelek meggyőzőbbek számukra.
2. A hitetlenek mentalitása minden korban ugyanaz. A Prófétákra is igaz mindez.
3. Allah Kegyelmes, Irgalmas és Adakozó minden időben. Ugyanakkor látjuk haragját, büntetését. Itt is felmerül a kérdés, melyiket érdemes választani?

(1 : 1)

In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

A Mindenható és Könyörületes Allah nevében

(26 : 1)
1. Ta. Sin. Mim.

1. Ta. Szin. Mim.

(26 : 2)
2. These are verses of the Book that makes (things) clear.

2. Ezek a Könyv megnyilvánító Áyái.

(26 : 3)
3. It may be thou frettest thy soul with grief, that they do not become Believers [1].

(26 : 4)
4. If (such) were Our Will, We could send down to them from the sky a Sign, to which they would bend their necks in humility [2].

(26 : 5)
5. But there comes not to them a newly-revealed Message from ((Allah)) Most Gracious, but they turn away therefrom.

(26 : 6)
6. They have indeed rejected (the Message): so they will know soon (enough) the truth of what they mocked at [3]!

(26 : 7)
7. Do they not look at the earth,- how many noble things of all kinds We have produced therein [4]?

(26 : 8)
8. Verily, in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.

(26 : 9)
9. And verily, thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.

9. Mert Urad, Ő a Nagyszerű, a Kegyelmes.

(26 : 10)
10. Behold, thy Lord called Moses: “Go to the people of iniquity [5],-

10. Mikor Urad Mózest szólította: „Menj a bűnösök népéhez [5],-”

(26 : 11)
11. “The people of the Pharaoh: will they not fear Allah.”

11. „A Fáraó népéhez, kik nem őrizkednek.”

(26 : 12)
12. He said: “O my Lord! I do fear that they will charge me with falsehood:

12. Mondta: „Ó, Uram! Félek, hogy meghazudtolnak!”

(26 : 13)
13. “My breast will be straitened. And my speech may not go (smoothly): so send unto Aaron [6].

13. „Keblem beszűkül, nyelvem nem forog, küldj hát Áronért [6].”

(26 : 14)
14. “And (further), they have a charge of crime against me; and I fear they may slay me [7].”

14. „Bűnnel vádolnak engem, félek, hogy megölnek [7].”

(26 : 15)
15. Allah said: “By no means! proceed then, both of you, with Our Signs; We are with you, and will listen (to your call).

15. Így szólt (Allah): „Nem így van az! Menjetek mindketten Áyáinkkal. Mi veletek leszünk és meghallunk titeket.”

(26 : 16)
16. “So go forth, both of you, to Pharaoh, and say: ‘We have been sent by the Lord and Cherisher of the worlds;

16. Menjetek mindketten a Fáraóhoz és mondjátok: „Minket a Világok Ura küldött!”

(26 : 17)
17. “‘Send thou with us the Children of Israel.'”

17. „Küldd el velünk Izrael fiait.”

(26 : 18)
18. (Pharaoh) said: “Did we not cherish thee as a child among us, and didst thou not stay in our midst many years of thy life [8]?

18. Mondta (a Fáraó): „Nem mi neveltünk tán téged gyermekként magunk közt és nem töltöttél-e velünk életedből jó pár évet [8]?”

(26 : 19)
19. “And thou didst a deed of thine which (thou knowest) thou didst, and thou art an ungrateful (wretch) [9]!”

(26 : 20)
20. Moses said: “I did it then, when I was in error [10].

20. Mondta (Mózes): „Akkor tettem meg azokat, mikor tévelyedett voltam [10].”

(26 : 21)
21. “So I fled from you (all) when I feared you; but my Lord has (since) invested me with judgment (and wisdom) and appointed me as one of the apostles [11].

(26 : 22)
22. “And this is the favour with which thou dost reproach me,- that thou hast enslaved the Children of Israel [12]!”

22. „Ez az a kegy, mit szememre vettek. Mert bizony, te szolgasorba vetetted Izrael fiait [12]!”

(26 : 23)
23. Pharaoh said: “And what is the ‘Lord and Cherisher of the worlds [13]‘?”

23. A Fáraó így szólt: „Ki az a Világok Ura [13]?”

(26 : 24)
24. (Moses) said: “The Lord and Cherisher of the heavens and the earth, and all between,- if ye want to be quite sure.”

(26 : 25)
25. (Pharaoh) said to those around: “Did ye not listen (to what he says) [14]?”

25. Így szólt (a Fáraó) azokhoz, kik körülötte álltak: „Nem hallottátok (mit mond) [14]?”

(26 : 26)
26. (Moses) said: “Your Lord and the Lord of your fathers from the beginning!”

26. Mondta (Mózes): „A ti Uratok és atyáitok Ura a kezdetektől!”

(26 : 27)
27. (Pharaoh) said: “Truly your apostle who has been sent to you is a veritable madman [15]!”

27. Mondta (a Fáraó): „Mert Prófétátok, kit hozzátok küldtek, bizony bolond [15]!”

(26 : 28)
28. (Moses) said: “Lord of the East and the West, and all between! if ye only had sense!”

28. Mondta (Mózes): „Ura Keletnek, Nyugatnak, s mi a kettő közt van! Bár felfognátok!”

(26 : 29)
29. (Pharaoh) said: “If thou dost put forward any god other than me, I will certainly put thee in prison [16]!”

29. Mondta (a Fáraó): „Ha más istent veszel magadnak, mint én, bizony börtönbe vetlek [16]!”

(26 : 30)
30. (Moses) said: “Even if I showed you something clear (and) convincing [17]?”

30. Mondta (Mózes): „Még akkor is, ha meggyőző dologgal állok elő [17]?”

(26 : 31)
31. (Pharaoh) said: “Show it then, if thou tellest the truth!”

31. Mondta (a Fáraó): „Állj elő vele, ha igazat szólsz!”

(26 : 32)
32. So (Moses) threw his rod, and behold, it was a serpent, plain (for all to see)!

(26 : 33)
33. And he drew out his hand, and behold, it was white to all beholders [18]!

33. Előhúzta kezét és lám! Fehérré lett az azt nézőknek [18]!

(26 : 34)
34. (Pharaoh) said to the Chiefs around him: “This is indeed a sorcerer well- versed [19]:

34. Így szólt (a Fáraó) főembereinek körülötte: „Ez bizony, tudós mágus [19].”

(26 : 35)
35. “His plan is to get you out of your land by his sorcery; then what is it ye counsel?”

35. „Mágiájával akar titeket elűzni Földetekről, hát mit döntötök?”

(26 : 36)
36. They said: “Keep him and his brother in suspense (for a while), and dispatch to the Cities heralds to collect-

(26 : 37)
37. “And bring up to thee all (our) sorcerers well-versed.”

(26 : 38)
38. So the sorcerers were got together for the appointment of a day well-known [20],

38. Össze lettek gyűjtve a mágusok a jól ismert nap idejére [20].

(26 : 39)
39. And the people were told: “Are ye (now) assembled?-

39. Mondták a népnek: „Összegyűltetek-e?”

(26 : 40)
40. “That we may follow the sorcerers (in religion) if they win [21]?”

40. (Mondták): „Tán követni tudjuk a mágusokat, ha ők lesznek a győztesek [21].”

(26 : 41)
41. So when the sorcerers arrived, they said to Pharaoh: “Of course – shall we have a (suitable) reward if we win [22]?

41. Mikor eljöttek a mágusok, így szóltak a Fáraóhoz: „Meg lesz-e jutalmunk, ha mi leszünk a győztesek [22]?”

(26 : 42)
42. He said: “Yea, (and more),- for ye shall in that case be (raised to posts) nearest (to my person).”

42. Mondta: „Hát persze! És akkor ti lesztek (hozzám) a legközelebb.”

(26 : 43)
43. Moses said to them: “Throw ye – that which ye are about to throw!”

(26 : 44)
44. So they threw their ropes and their rods, and said: “By the might of Pharaoh, it is we who will certainly win!”

44. Elhajították köteleiket, botjaikat, s mondták: „A Fáraó hatalmára! Mert, bizony, mi leszünk a győztesek!”

(26 : 45)
45. Then Moses threw his rod, when, behold, it straightway swallows up all the falsehoods which they fake!

(26 : 46)
46. Then did the sorcerers fall down, prostrate in adoration,

46. Levetették magukat a mágusok (földre) borulva).

(26 : 47)
47. Saying: “We believe in the Lord of the Worlds,

47. Mondták: „Hiszünk a Világok Urában,”

(26 : 48)
48. “The Lord of Moses and Aaron.”

48. „Mózes és Áron Urában.”

(26 : 49)
49. Said (Pharaoh): “Believe ye in Him before I give you permission? surely he is your leader, who has taught you sorcery! but soon shall ye know!

(26 : 50)
50. They said: “No matter! for us, we shall but return to our Lord!

50. Mondták: „Nem számít! Mi bizony, Urunk felé fordulunk!”

(26 : 51)
51. “Only, our desire is that our Lord will forgive us our faults, that we may become foremost among the believers [23]!”

(26 : 52)
52. By inspiration we told Moses: “Travel by night with my servants; for surely ye shall be pursued.”

(26 : 53)
53. Then Pharaoh sent heralds to (all) the Cities,

53. A Fáraó hírnököket küldött a városokba,

(26 : 54)
54. (Saying): “These (Israelites) are but a small band,

(26 : 55)
55. “And they are raging furiously against us;

55. „És ők haragra gerjedtek ellenünk.”

(26 : 56)
56. “But we are a multitude amply fore-warned.”

56. „Mi (pedig) fenyegető sokaság vagyunk,”

(26 : 57)
57. So We expelled them from gardens, springs,

57. És Mi elűztük őket a kertekből és forrásokból,

(26 : 58)
58. Treasures, and every kind of honourable position;

58. Kincsekből és becses tisztségekből,

(26 : 59)
59. Thus it was, but We made the Children of Israel inheritors of such things.

59. Ekképpen léptettük ezek örökébe Izrael fiait.

(26 : 60)
60. So they pursued them at sunrise.

60. És követték őket napkeltekor.

(26 : 61)
61. And when the two bodies saw each other, the people of Moses said: “We are sure to be overtaken.”

61. Mikor a két sokaság meglátta egymást, Mózes társai így szóltak: „Bizonyos, hogy beérnek minket.”

(26 : 62)
62. (Moses) said: “By no means! my Lord is with me! Soon will He guide me!”

62. Mondta (Mózes): „Nem úgy van! Bizony, Uram velem van és vezetni fog!”

(26 : 63)
63. Then We told Moses by inspiration: “Strike the sea with thy rod.” So it divided, and each separate part became like the huge, firm mass of a mountain.

(26 : 64)
64. And We made the other party approach thither.

64. Majd a másikakat odaközelítettük.

(26 : 65)
65. We delivered Moses and all who were with him;

65. Megmenekítettük Mózest és azokat, kik vele voltak mind.

(26 : 66)
66. But We drowned the others.

66. Majd vízbe fojtottuk a többit.

(26 : 67)
67. Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe [24].

(26 : 68)
68. And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.

68. Mert bizony, Urad a Nagyszerű, a Bölcs.

(26 : 69)
69. And rehearse to them (something of) Abraham’s story [25].

69. Recitálj nekik Ábrahám híreiből [25].

(26 : 70)
70. Behold, he said to his father and his people: “What worship ye?”

(26 : 71)
71. They said: “We worship idols, and we remain constantly in attendance on them [26].”

71. Mondták: „Bálványokat imádunk és megmaradunk azok hódolatában [26].”

(26 : 72)
72. He said: “Do they listen to you when ye call (on them), or do you good or harm?”

72. Mondta: „Hallanak-e titeket, mikor szólítjátok őket?”

(26 : 73)
73. Or do you good or harm

73. Vagy hasznotokra vannak tán, vagy ártanak?

(26 : 74)
74. They said: “Nay, but we found our fathers doing thus (what we do).”

74. Mondták: „Mi több! Atyáinkat találtuk ekképpen tenni.”

(26 : 75)
75. He said: “Do ye then see whom ye have been worshipping,-

75. Mondta: „Látjátok-e kihez imádkoztok?”

192. Verily this is a Revelation from the Lord of the Worlds:

192. Ez bizony, a Világok Urának Kinyilatkoztatása,

(26 : 193)
193. With it came down the spirit of Faith and Truth [56]

193. Mivel leküldte az Igaz Lelket [56]

(26 : 194)
194. To thy heart and mind, that thou mayest admonish [57].

194. A szívedre, hogy figyelmeztetve légy [57].

(26 : 195)
195. In the perspicuous Arabic tongue.

195. Világossá tevő Arab nyelven.

(26 : 196)
196. Without doubt it is (announced) in the mystic Books of former peoples [58].

(26 : 197)
197. Is it not a Sign to them that the Learned of the Children of Israel knew it (as true) [59]?

(26 : 198)
198. Had We revealed it to any of the non-Arabs,

198. Ha azt nem Araboknak nyilatkozattuk volna ki,

(26 : 199)
199. And had he recited it to them, they would not have believed in it [60].

(26 : 200)
200. Thus have We caused it to enter the hearts of the sinners.

200. Ekképpen vágtunk vele utat a bűnösök szívébe.

(26 : 201)
201. They will not believe in it until they see the grievous Penalty;

201. Nem hisznek benne addig, míg nem látják a fájdalmas büntetést,

(26 : 202)
202. But the (Penalty) will come to them of a sudden, while they perceive it not;

(26 : 203)
203. Then they will say: “Shall we be respited?”

203. Majd így szólnak: „Kapunk-e haladékot?”

(26 : 204)
204. Do they then ask for Our Penalty to be hastened on?

204. Tán büntetésünket sürgetik?

(26 : 205)
205. Seest thou? If We do let them enjoy (this life) for a few years,

205. Látod-e, hogy miként kényeztettük őket évekig?

(26 : 206)
206. Yet there comes to them at length the (Punishment) which they were promised!

206. Majd eljön nekik az, mire ígéretet kaptak!

(26 : 207)
207. It will profit them not that they enjoyed (this life)!

(26 : 208)
208. Never did We destroy a population, but had its warners –

(26 : 209)
209. By way of reminder; and We never are unjust.

209. Emlékeztetőként. És Mi nem voltunk igazságtalanok.

(26 : 210)
210. No evil ones have brought down this (Revelation [61]):

(26 : 211)
211. It would neither suit them nor would they be able (to produce it).

(26 : 212)
212. Indeed they have been removed far from even (a chance of) hearing it.

213. So call not on any other god with Allah, or thou wilt be among those under the Penalty.

213. Ne szólíts hát Allahhal más istent, nehogy a büntetettek közt légy.

(26 : 215)
215. And lower thy wing to the Believers who follow thee [62].

(26 : 217)
217. And put thy trust on the Exalted in Might, the Merciful,-

217. És hagyatkozz a Nagyszerűre, a Kegyelmesre,-

(26 : 218)
218. Who seeth thee standing forth (in prayer),

218. Ki lát, mikor (imára) felállsz,

(26 : 220)
220. For it is He Who heareth and knoweth all things.

220. Mert bizony, Ő a Meghalló, a Mindentudó.

(26 : 221)
221. Shall I inform you, (O people!), on whom it is that the evil ones descend?

221. Elmondjam-e nektek, kit szállnak meg a Sátánok?

227. Except those who believe, work righteousness, engage much in the remembrance of Allah, and defend themselves only after they are unjustly attacked. And soon will the unjust assailants know what vicissitudes their affairs will take [64]!

    APPENDIX TO SURAH ASH-SHUARA
    THAMUD INSCRIPTIONS AT AL HIJR
    YUSUF ALI

    (see 26:141-159; 15:80-84; 7:73-79)

Mr. C.M. Doughty traveled in Northwestern Arabia and Najd in the 1880’s, and his book Arabia Deserta form one of the most notable of Arabian travel books. It was first published in two volumes by the Cambridge University Press in 1888, and has recently gone through several editions. The edition I have used is the unabridged one-volume edition printed in London in 1926. the reference in this Appendix should be understood to refer to that edition.

Doughty travelled on the old Pilgrim Caravan from Damascus as far as Mada’in Salih, and then parted company with the Pilgrims and turned into Najd. Mada’in Salih (the Cities of Salih), is one of the stations on the Syrian Pilgrimage route, about 180 miles north of Madinah. Tabuk, to which the Holy Prophet led an expedition in A.H. 9 (see introduction to Surah 9), is about 170 miles farther to the northwest, and Ma’an Junction about 150 miles still farther. Mada’in Salih’s was also an important station on the prehistoric gold and frankincense (bakhur) route between Yemen and Egypt on Syria.

In sacred history it marks the ruined site of the Thamud people to whom the prophet Salih was sent, whose she-camel was a symbolic Sign and is connected with Salih’s history. See 26:155-157. To the west and Northwest of Mada’in Salih are the Harrat or tracts of volcanic land covered with lava, stretching as far as Tabuk.

This is how Doughty describes his first view of Mada’in Salih, approaching from the northwest. “At length in the dim morning twilight, as we journeyed, we were come to a sandy brow and a straight descending place betwixt cliffs of sandstones. There were some shouting in the forward, and Aswad bid me look up, ‘this was a famous place, Mabrak al Naqah’” (the kneeling place of the she-camel of Salih). “It is short, at first steep, and issues upon the plain of al Hijr, which is Mada’in Salih; where the sun coming up showed the singular landscape of this valley plain, encompassed with might sandstone precipices (which here resemble ranges of city walls, fantastic towers, and castle buildings), and upon them lie high shouldering sand drifts. The bottom is sand, with much growth of desert bushes; and I perceived some thin sprinkled volcanic drift. Westward is seen the immense mountain blackness, terrible and lowering, of the Harrat.” (Arabia Deserata, p. 83, vol. 1).

Doughty took some rubbings of some of the inscriptions which were accessible to him and they were studied by the great Semitic scholar M. Ernest Renan and published by the Academic des Inscriptions et Belles-Letters. Renan’s Report in French is printed as an Appendix to Chapters IV, V, and VI of Arabia Deserta (pp. 180-187, vol 1) and M. le Marquis de Vofgue’s Note (also in French) on the Nabataean sculptured Architecture at Mada’in Salih at pp. 620-623, vol 1. The general result of these studies may be summarized. The sculpture and architecture are found to be of the same kind as the Nabataean monuments at Petra (for which see 7:73). At Petra there are no dated Inscriptions preserved, but at Mada’in Salih we have several. There are at Mada’in Salih perhaps 100 sepulchral rock-hewn chambers, in some of which are found human bones and remains, showing that the Nabataeans knew the art of embalming, and used linen of the same kind as was used in ancient Egypt. The tombs are dedicated in perpetuity to named families, and the named Nabataean kings have, each the epithet “loving his people”. There are flat side-pilasters, and the figures of fourfooted beasts, eagles, and other birds are discernible. Besides the sepulchral chambers, there is a great Hall or Council Chamber (Diwan). This may have been a Temple. The gods worshipped there were those whose names we know from other Nabataean sources-Dusares, Martaba, Allat, Manat, Ka’bah’is, and Hubal. Allat, Manat, and Hubal are also known to us in connection with the idols of the Pagan Quraysh of the times of Ignorance.

It is interesting to find the word Mesjeda (Arabic Masjid) already used here for “place of worship”. Triads of stones were worshipped as gods. The Inscriptions have dates from 3 B.C. to 79 A.C. within this short period of 82 years we can see something of the development of Semitic paleography. The writing becomes more and more cursive with the years, we have here a central point between Old Armenian, Square Hebrew, Palmyran, Sinaitic, Kufi and Naskh. We may treat the Nabataeans as historical, as we have established dates. The Thamud were prehistoric, and occupied sites which were afterwards occupied by the Nabataeans and others. The kneeling place of Salih’s she-camel (Mabrak al Naqah) and the well of the she-camel (Biru al Naqah), and a number of local names keep alive the race memory of an ancient Arabic people and their prophet Salih

A múlt század nyolcvanas éveiben (itt az 1880-as évek értendők) C.M.

Mada’in Szalih (Szalih városai), zarándokok számára pihenőállomás volt, 250 km-re, északra Medinától. Tabuk, ahova a Próféta hadjáratra indult (9. Mada’in Szalihtól észak-északnyugatra lávával borított vulkanikus nyúlványok a Harrat-ok kezdődnek, melyek Tabukig elérnek.

Így írja le első benyomását Doughty Midi’an Szalihról, ahogy északnyugatról megközelítette. Mindezt vastagon befedte a homok. Elszórva, vulkanikus eredetű kőréteget érzékeltem a felszínen. Nyugatra óriási fekete hegyek emelkednek a magasba, majd leszakadnak a Harratba.” (Arabia Deserta, p. 83. vol. 1.)

Doughty megtisztított a homoktól pár útjába akadt kőbe vésett feliratot. Ezeket M. Ernest Renan, a sémi tudományokkal foglalkozó tudós megvizsgálta, majd eredményeit az Academic des Inscriptions et Belles-Letters közölte. Renan jelentése franciául az Arabia Deserta IV-V-VI. fejezetéhez tartozó függelékben olvasható (pp. 180-187, vol 1) és M. le Marquis de Vofgue’s Note (szintén franciául) Nabateusi szobrászat és építészet Mada’in Szalihban c. munkában. P. 620-623, vol 1. A szobrászati és építészeti stílusjegyek megfelelnek a Petrában fellelhető Nabateusi emlékeken található motívumoknak (7:73). Petrában eddig nem bukkantak nyomára olyan feliratnak, amin dátum szerepel, azonban Mada’in Szalihban számos ilyen darab van. Mada’in Szalihban talán 100 sziklába faragott sírkamra van, melyek közül párból emberi csontok kerültek elő.

Feliratok i. e. 3- i. sz. 79-ig olvashatók. A betűk évről évre kurzívabbak, íveltebbek lesznek.

[1] “They” are the Pagans of Makkah. From a human point of view it was a great disappointment to Allah’s Messenger in the middle period of his Makkan ministry that the Makkan could not be brought to believe in the Truth.

[1] Utalás Mekka pogányaira. A Prófétát elkeserítette küldetésének középső Mekkai szakaszában a polgárok értetlensége, ami miatt nem tudta őket a Hit irányába terelni.

[2] If it had been Allah’s Will and Plan to force people’s will, He could quite easily have forced the Makkans. But His Will and Plan work differently. His revelation is meant to train man’s own will so that it conforms to Allah’s beneficent purpose.

[3] They may laugh at Allah’s Message of righteousness, but they will soon see the power of Truth and realise the real significance of the movement which they opposed. Where were the Pagans of Makkah after Badr, and still more, after the bloodless surrender of Makkah? And the meaning may be applied universally in all history.

[3] Kinevethetik a Próféta egyenességét, jóságát, de nemsokára szembesülnek Allah Igazságának hatalmával és felismerik a mozgalom jelentőségét, amivel szembefordultak. Hol voltak ezek a pogányok Badr-nál, vagy később, mikor Mekka vértelenül megadta magát? A vers értelme ennél általánosabban is kivetíthető.

[4] If evil has a little run in this life, let them not run away with the notion that the world is for evil. They have only to look round at the physical and moral world around them, and they would be undeceived.

[5] The part of the story of Moses told here is how Moses felt diffident about undertaking his commission; – how Allah reassured him; – how he went to Pharaoh with “the Signs”; – how Pharaoh and his people rejected him; – how their blasphemy recoiled on themselves, but the cause of Allah triumphed; in other words the point here is the reaction of a wicked people to the light that was held up to them, considered in its relation to the mind of Allah’s Messenger.

[5] Mózes küldetésének történetét itt Mózes szemszögéből látjuk. 1. Allah biztosítékot adott neki. 2. Miként ment a Fáraóhoz az Áyákkal, Jelekkel. 3.

[6] Moses had an impediment in his speech, and his mission was risky: see next note. But Allah’s Plan works in wondrous ways. Aaron was given to assist him in his mission, and Moses’ shortcomings were transformed by Allah’s grace into power, so that he became the most powerful leader of Israel.

[6] Mózes beszédhibával küzdött, ami akadályozta küldetése sikerét. Allah Terve azonban csodálatosan működik. Áron társa lett küldetésben és Mózes hiányossága, Allah kegyelméből hatalommá alakult át, ami végül Izrael népének első számú vezetőjévé tette.

[7] Moses was brought up in the palace of Pharaoh, as narrated in his personal story in 20:39-40 and. When he was grown-up he saw an Egyptian smiling an Israelite, and as the Israelites were being generally oppressed by the Egyptians, Moses’ anger was roused, and he slew the Egyptian. He then fled to the Midianite country in the Sinai peninsula, where he received the divine commission. But the charge of slaying the Egyptian was hanging against him. He was also apparently quick-tempered. But Allah’s grace cured his temper and he became wise; his impediment in speech, for he stood up boldly to speak to Pharaoh; and his fear, for he dared the Egyptians with Allah’s Signs, and they were afraid of him.

[7] Mózes a Fáraó palotájában nevelkedett, ahogy a korábbi versekben is láttuk, pl. 20:39-40. A gyilkosság vádja, azonban ott lebegett felette. Allah megbízatásával jelleme megváltozott. Ülepedettebb, érettebb, nyugodtabb, bölcsebb lett, ami meglátszott párbeszédén a Fáraóval és embereivel. Félelme alábbhagyott és nem ő félt, hanem tőle féltek, különösen Egyiptom népe, amikor bemutatta nekik Allah Áyáit.

[8] There is here a little play of wit on the part of Pharaoh. When Moses speaks of the “Lord and Cherisher of the Worlds”, Pharaoh says: “Who cherished you? Did we not bring you up as a child? Did you not grow up among us?” By implication Pharaoh suggest that he is the cherisher of Moses, and in any case Pharaoh laid claim to godhead himself.

[9] Further, Pharaoh reminds Moses of his having slain the Egyptian, and taunts him: “You are not only a murderer: you are an ungrateful wretch” (using kafir again in a double sense) “to have killed one of the race that brought you up!”

[10] What is Moses’ reply? He is no longer afraid. He tells the whole truth, extenuating nothing in his own favour. “Yes I did it: but I did it under an error.” There are three implications in this: 1. “I was wrong in doing it in a temper and in being hasty; 2. was wrong in taking the law into my own hands, but I repented and asked for Allah’s pardon (28:15– 16); 3. that was at a time when I was under your influence, but since then I am a changed man, as Allah has called me.”

[10] Mi volt Mózes válasza? Itt már nyoma sincs félelemnek. Elmondja mi történt, nem kérve felmentést, enyhítést tetteire: „Igen, elkövettem, amikor tévelyedett voltam.” Itt három dologra utalhatott: 1. Hibás voltam, mert indulatos, forróvérű, meggondolatlan voltam. 2.

[11] He accounts for all his movements, much more than Pharaoh had asked for. He has nothing to hide. At that time he was under the influence of fear, and he had fled from him. Now he is serving Allah, the Lord of the Worlds. He has no fear: he is a messenger.

De most Allahot szolgálja, a Világok Urát.

[12] Pharaoh had called Moses ungrateful and reproached him with all the favours which Moses had received from the Egyptians. “What favours?” he says; “Do you count it also as a favour to me that you have enslaved my brethren the Children of Israel?” Moses was now speaking as a Prophet of Allah, not as an individual.

[12] A Fáraó hálátlansággal vádolja Mózest.

[13] Moses having eliminated all personalities, the argument now comes up to the highest plane of all,-the attributes of Allah and His mercies.

[14] Moses had stiffed up the wrath of Pharaoh both by putting forward the name of the One True God as against Pharaoh’s pretended godhead, and by suggesting that any man of judgment would understand Allah’s majesty. While Pharaoh turns to his people in indignation, Moses drives the nail in further: “He is the God of the heavens and the earth and all between: therefore He is also your God, and the God of your fathers from the beginning. Any other pretensions are false!”

[15] Pharaoh is further perturbed. In reply to Moses’ statement that Allah, the One True God is also the God of the Egyptians and Pharaoh also, Pharaoh says sarcastically to his Court: “Look at this ‘Messenger’ of yours; he seems to be mad!” But Moses is not abashed. He boldly says what is the truth: “It is you who are mad! The God Whom I preach is the universal Lord,-of the East and of the West. He reigns wherever you go!”

[15] A Fáraó megzavarodott.

[16] Now we come to the crisis. Pharaoh threatens Moses with prison for treason. Moses remains calm and stiff argues: “What if I show you a miracle? Will it convince you that I am not mad, and that I have behind me the Lord of all the Worlds?”

[16] Eljutottunk a tetőpontra. A Fáraó börtönnel fenyegeti Mózest felségárulás miatt.

[17] The Egyptians were addicted to magic and sorcery. If a true miracle were shown to them, would they believe? Perhaps they would see the hollowness of their own magic. In fact this actually happened with the Egyptian sorcerers themselves and perhaps with the commonalty.

[18] 7:107-108. See the whole passage there, and the notes thereon.

[18] 7:107-108. Lásd az ottani bejegyzést.

[19] 7:109 it is the Chiefs who say this. The fact is that it was a general consultation, and this was the general feeling, expressed in words by each to the others.

[19] 7:109 a főemberek megnyilvánulását látjuk.

[20] A day well-known: a solemn day of festival: see 20:59. The object was to get together as large a concourse of people as possible. It was confidently expected that the Egyptian sorcerers with all their organisation would win with their tricks against these amateur Israelites, and so the State cult of the worship of Pharaoh would be fastened on the necks of the people more firmly than ever.

[21] The people are to come and witness the triumph of the State religion, so that they may become the more obedient to Pharaoh and more compliant with the demands of the priests. The State religion included magic and the worship of Pharaoh.

[22] There was no such thing as pure loyalty to an exploiting ruler like this Pharaoh. The sorcerers, who were probably also priests, were venal, and they hoped to establish their own hold on both king and people by the further enrichment of themselves and their order.

[22] A lojalitás nem működött a mágusok körében, akik feltehetőleg maguk is papok voltak. Mind saját hasznát és jövőjének beteljesülését leste a Fáraó udvarában.

[23] This is the core of the lesson enforced in this passage. What was the reaction of the environment to the Light or Message of Allah? – It transformed Moses so that he became a fearless leader, one of the foremost in faith. – From men like Pharaoh and his corrupt court, it called forth obstinacy, spite, and all the tricks and snares of evil, but Evil was defeated on its own ground. – The magicians were touched by the glorious Light of Allah, and they were ready to suffer tortures and death, their sole ambition (in their transformed state) being to be foremost in Faith!

[23] Eljutottunk a tanulság levonásához. Mi volt az Allah Világosságára adott reakció? 1. Mózest átváltoztatta egy tántoríthatatlan, bátor vezetővé, akit hite vitt előre. 2.

[24] As it was then, so it is now. In spite of the obvious Signs of Allah, people who are blind in their obstinate resistance to Truth accomplish their own destruction, while humble, persecuted men of Faith are transformed by the Light of Allah, and obtain salvation.

[25] For the argument of this Surah the incidents in Abraham’s life are not relevant and are not mentioned. What is mentioned is: – the steps by which he taught about the sin of false worship, in the form of a Dialogue; – the aims of a righteous man not only in his individual life, but for his ancestors and posterity, in the form of a Prayer; – and a picture of the Future Judgment, in the form of a vision. is covered by verses 70-82; by 83-87; and by 88-102.

[26] They want to show their true and assiduous devotion. But Abraham goes at once to the heart of the matter by asking: “To whom is your devotion paid? Is the object worthy of it?”

[26] Buzgón büszkélkednek hitükkel, ami inkább hiedelem, mint hit. Ábrahám egyszerre csak a lényegre tör: „Kihez imádkoztok ti valójában? Érdemes ez arra, hogy imádkozzanak hozzá?”

[27] The things that you worship are enemies to mankind: let me testify from my own personal experience: they are enemies to me: they can do me no good, but would lead me astray. Contrast with their impotence or their power of mischief the One True God Whom I worship: He created me and all the Worlds: He cherishes me and guides me; He takes care of me; and when I die, He will give me new life; He will forgive me and grant me final Salvation. Will you then come to this true worship? How can you doubt, after seeing the contrast of the one with the other? Is it not as the contrast between Light and Darkness?’

Nincsenek kétségeitek a bálványokkal kapcsolatban?

[28] Having shown clearly the distinction between the False and the True, Abraham now shows in the form of a Prayer what his inmost wishes are.

[28] Miután Ábrahám bemutatta Allahot, összehasonlította a Világosságot a Sötétséggel, most fohászába tömöríti a kívánságait az Úr felé.

[29] The false gods, being devils or personified false fancies, will be all involved in the punishment of Hell, together with their worshippers, and the ultimate sources of evil, the hosts of Iblis or Satan.

[29] A hamis istenségek, eluralkodott szenvedélyek, melyek isten helyébe léptek, mind a Pokol tüzének martaléka lesz azokkal együtt, akik az ő szolgálatukban, hódolatukban éltek. Ezek mind Iblisz, a sátán katonái, ő parancsolt nekik földi életükben.

[30] They now see that the people who seduced them were themselves evil and subject to the penalties of evil, and their seductions were frauds. They feel that they ought to have seen it before.

[31] This apparent longing for a chance of return is dishonest. If they were sent back, they would certainly return to their evil ways: 6:27-28. Besides, they have had numerous chances already in this life, and they have used them for mischief or evil.

[32] Noah’s generation had lost all faith and abandoned themselves to evil. They had rejected the Message of messengers previously sent to the world. Noah was sent to them as one of themselves (“their brother”). His life was open before them: he had proved himself pure in heart and conduct, and worthy of every trust. Would they fear Allah and follow his advice? They could see that he had no ends of his own to serve. Would they not listen to him?

[32] Noé nemzedéke hitét vesztette és a gonoszt követte. Elutasították a korábbi Próféták üzeneteit. Noé közülük való volt („fivérük”). Élete ismert volt előttük, tiszta becsületes, jóravaló emberként tartották számon, aki érdemes a bizalomra. Miért nem félték Allahot és követték tanácsait? Láthatták, hogy Noé mennyire odaadóan szolgálja Őt. Miért nem hallgattak rá?

[33] The leaders of the people are speaking, as the Quraish leaders spoke in the time of the holy Prophet. “We know that thou hast been trustworthy in thy life. But look at the ‘rag tag and bob tail’ that follow thee! Dost thou expect us to be like them or to be classed with them?” His answer was: “I know nothing against them; if they have done any wrong, or are only hypocrites, they are answerable to Allah; how can I drive them away from me, seeing that I am expressly sent to admonish all people?”

[34] All people who have faith have the right to come and listen to Allah’s Word and receive Allah’s Mercy, whether they are publicans and sinners, “Harijans” and low-caste men, men of “superior” or “inferior” races. The Prophet of Allah welcomes them all, as His Message has to shine before the whole world.

[35] Two other cases occur to me where prophets of Allah were threatened with death by stoning: – one was Abraham (19:46), – and the other was Shu’ayb (11:91). In neither case did the threats deter them from carrying out their mission. On the contrary the threats recoiled on those who threatened. So also did it happen in the case of Noah and the holy Prophet.

[35] Két másik Prófétát is megkövezéssel fenyegettek: 1. Ábrahámot (19:46), 2. Shu’eybet (11:91). Egyik esetben sem tántorította el őket küldetésüktől. Ellenkezőleg, a fenyegetések visszaütöttek azokra, akik mondták. Ez történt Noé esetében is.

[36] The story of Noah’s Flood is told in 11:36-48. Here the point emphasised is Noah’s patience and constancy against threats, and the triumph and preservation of Allah’s Truth even though the world was ranged against it.

[37] This and the following verse run like a refrain throughout this Surah, and give the key-note to the subject-matter: how the Message of Allah is preached, how it is rejected in all ages, and how it triumphs at last, through the Mercy of Allah.

[37] Ebben és a következő versekben refrénszerűen ismétlődnek a történelmi igazságok: miket hirdettek Allah Prófétái, miként utasították el őket különböző korokban, végül miként győzedelmeskedtek Allah kegyelme által.

[38] See 7:65 for the ‘Ad people and their location. Here the emphasis is on the fact that they were materialists believing in brute force, and felt secure in their fortresses and resources, but were found quite helpless when Allah’s Message came and they rejected it.

[38] Lásd 7:65, ahol ismertetjük Aád népét, helyüket. Itt a hangsúly anyagiasságukra, nyers erőbe vetett bizalmukra irányul és arra, mennyire bíztak erődjeikben, forrásaikban, de végül tehetetlenek voltak, amikor Allah lesújtott rájuk.

[39] Any merely material civilisation prides itself on show and parade. Its votaries scatter monuments for all sorts of things in conspicuous places-monuments which commemorate deeds and events which are forgotten in a few generations!

[39] Minden anyagi civilizáció büszke saját vívmányaira. Híveik emlékműveket, tárgyakat szórnak el jellegzetes helyeken, melyek emlékeztetik az utókort tetteikről, nehogy a következő nemzedékek megfeledkezzenek róluk.

[40] The gifts are described generally, immaterial and material. “All that ye know” includes not only material things, but knowledge and the faculties by which knowledge may be used for human well-being, all that makes life beautiful and refined. “Cattle” means wealth generally, and “sons” means population and manpower. “Gardens and Springs” are things that contribute to the delight and pleasure of man.

[41] “But you have misused all those gifts, and you will suffer the inevitable penalties for your misuse and or your ingratitude.”

[42] “We are not going to attend to you whether you preach to us or not.”

[42] „Nem csatlakozunk hozzád, bármit is hirdetsz nekünk.”

[43] They said, as many of our modern enemies of religion say, “you are only reviving an ancient superstition, a dope of the crowd; there is no such thing as a Hereafter, or the sort of punishments you announce!”

[44] For the Thamud people see 7:73. They were great builders in stone and a people with agricultural wealth, but they were an exclusive people and oppressed the poor. The point emphasised here is: “How long will your wealth last, especially if you depress your own people and dishonour Allah’s Signs by sacrilege?” The inscriptions on the Thamud remains of rock-cut buildings in Al-Hijr are described in the Appendix VII at the end of this Surah.

[45] The date palm flowers on a long spathe: when the flowers develop into fruit, the heavy ones hang with the load of fruit. The Thamud evidently were proud of their skill in producing corn and fruit and in hewing fine dwellings out of rocks, like the later dwellings of Roman times in the town of Petra.

[45] „Mik roskadoznak a füzérektől”: a datolyafüzérek alatt roskadoznak a fák. Thamud népe büszke volt veteményeire, pálmaligeteire és sziklába vájt épületeire, melyek a Római kori Petrában is láthatók.

[46] For this she-camel, see 7:73. The she-camel was to be a Sign and a test-case. Would they respect her rights of watering (and pasturage)?

[46] A tevetehénről szóló történek a 7:73-ban olvasható.

[47] Their regrets were too late. They had themselves asked for a Sign. The Sign had been given to them in the she-camel, which their prophet Salih had put forward as a test-case. Would they, through that symbol, respect the law’ of equity by which all people had rights in water and in the gifts of nature? They refused to respect that law, and committed sacrilege by deliberately killing the she-camel. They themselves came to an evil end.

[48] The story of Lut (Lot) will be found in 7:80-84. Here the point is that the people of the Cities of the Plain were shamelessly addicted to vice against nature, and Lut’s warning only exasperated them, until they were destroyed by a shower of brimstone.

[48] Lót története a 7:80-84-ben olvasható. A Fennsík lakói természetellenes gyakorlattal éltek.

[49] He was only among them from a stem sense of duty. The whole atmosphere there was detestable to him, and he was glad to escape when duty no longer demanded his presence there. He prayed for deliverance from such surroundings.

[50] This was Lut’s wife, who lingered behind and was among those who perished, See 7:83.

[50] Ez Lót felesége volt. Ő maradt hátra és elérte őt végzete. Lásd 7:83.

[51] They were a commercial people, but they were given to fraud, injustice, and wrongful mischief (by intermeddling with others). They are asked to fear Allah and follow His ways: it is He Who also created their predecessors among mankind, who never prospered by fraud and violent wrong-doing, but only justice and fair dealing.

Isten teremtette elődeiket is, akik sose jártak jól, amikor másokat becsaptak. Csak akkor prosperáltak, amikor becsületesek voltak.

[52] They deny that he is a prophet or that they are doing wrong, or that any former generations behaved differently. They think they are the true exponents of human nature, and that such as he-idealists-are mere madmen.

[53] ‘If you really claim any real contact with Allah, let us see if you can bring down a piece of the sky to fall on us!’

[54] Perhaps a shower of ashes and cinders accompanying a volcanic eruption. If these people were the same as the Midianites, there was also an earthquake. See 7:91

    [55] See above 26:121.

    [55] Lásd feljebb: 26:121.

[56] Ruh al Amin, the epithet of Gabriel, who came with the inspired Messages to the holy Prophet, is difficult to render in a single epithet in translation.

[57] Qalb (Heart) signifies not only the seat of the affections, but also the seat of the memory and understanding.

[58] Here the word refers to the earlier Revelations.

[58] Itt a korábbi kinyilatkoztatásokra céloz

[59] Many of the Jewish Doctors recognised the holy Prophet’s Message as a Message from Allah, e.g., ‘Abdullah ibn Salam and Mukhairiq.

[59] Sok Zsidó tanult ember, tudós felismerte a Próféta Üzenetében Allah Szavát. Pl. Abdullah ibn Salam és Mukariq.

[60] The turn of Arabia having come for receiving Allah’s Revelation, as was foretold in previous Revelations, it was inevitable that it should be in the Arab tongue through the mouth of an Arab. Otherwise it would have been unintelligible, and the Arabs could not have received the Faith and become the vehicles for its promulgation as actually happened in history.

[61] Such a beneficent message can never suit the purposes of Satan, nor would it be in their power to produce it. In fact Good and Evil are poles asunder, and Evil cannot even hear words of Good, of tender Pity for sinners and Forgiveness for the penitent!

[62] That is, be kind, gentle, and considerate with them, as a high flying bird is when she lowers her wing to her offspring. 17:24 and 15:88

[62] Légy kedves, megbízható és figyelmes velük, akár a madár, mely fiókáinak leszegi szárnyát és védelmébe veszi azokat. 17:24 és 15:88.

[63] Poetry and other arts are not in themselves evil, but may on the contrary be used in the service of religion and righteousness. But there is a danger that they may be prostituted for base purposes. If they are insincere (“they say what they do not”) or are divorced from actual life or its goodness or its serious purpose, they may become instruments of evil or futility. They then wander about without any set purpose, and seek the depths (valleys) of human folly rather than the heights of divine light.

[64] Poetry and the fine arts which are to be commended are those which emanate from minds steeped in Faith, which try to carry out in life the fine sentiments they express in their artistic work, aim at the glory of Allah rather than at self-glorification or the fulsome praise of men with feet of clay, and do not (as in Jihad) attack anything except aggressive evil. In this sense a perfect artist should be a perfect man. Perfection may not be attainable in this life, but it should be the aim of every man, and especially of one who wishes to become a supreme artist, not only in technique but in spirit and essentials. Among the commendable poets contemporary with the holy Prophet may be mentioned Hassan and Labid: the latter had the honour of being one of the seven whose poems were selected for “hanging” (the Mu’allaqat) in the Days of Ignorance.

A tökéletes művész, a magánéletben is tökéletességre törekszik.
