Introduction to Surah Ta-Ha (Ta-Ha)

Name

This Surah takes its name from its “first word “Ta Ha.” This name, like the names of many other Surahs, is merely symbolic.

Period of Revelation

The period of its revelation is the same as of Surah Maryam. It is just possible that it was sent down during the Migration to Habash or just after it. Anyhow, it is certain that this Surah was revealed before Hadrat Umar embraced Islam.

According to a well known and authentic tradition when Hadrat Umar set out to kill the Holy Prophet, he met a certain person, who said, “Before you do anything else, you should know that your own sister and brother-in-law have embraced Islam” Hearing this, he directly went to the house of his sister. There he found his sister, Fatimah, and his brother-in-law, Said bin Zaid, learning the contents of a scroll from Khabbab bin Art. When Fatimah saw him coming she hid the scroll at once, but Hadrat Umar had heard the recital, so he began to interrogate them about it. Then he began to thrash his brother-in-law, and wounded his sister, who tried to protect him. At last both of them confessed, “We have become Muslims; you may do whatever you like.” As Hadrat Umar was moved to see blood running down from her head, he said, “Show me the thing you were reading.” The sister asked him to promise on oath that he would not tear it, and added, “You cannot touch it unless you have a bath.” Accordingly, Hadrat Umar took his bath and when he began to read the scroll, which contained this Surah, he spontaneously spoke out, “What an excellent thing!” At this Hadrat Khabbab, who had hidden himself at the sound of his footsteps, came out of his hiding and said, “By God, I have high expectations that Allah will get great service from you to propagate the Message of His Prophet, for just yesterday I heard the Holy Prophet praying to Allah, ‘My Lord, make Abul Hakam bin Hisham (Abu Jahl) or Umar bin Khattab a supporter of Islam. So O Umar, turn to Allah, turn to Allah.” These words proved to be so persuasive that he at once accompanied Hadrat Khabbab and went to the Holy Prophet to embrace Islam. This happened a short time after the Migration to Habash.

Theme and Topics of Discussion

This Surah begins with the enunciation of the object of the Revelation of the Qur’an to this effect: “O Muhammad, this Quran has not been sent down to you to put you unnecessarily to some great affliction. It does not demand from you to perform the impossible task of imbuing the hearts of the obdurate disbelievers with Faith. It is merely an admonition meant to guide on to the Right Path those who fear God and want to save themselves from His punishment. This Quran is the Word of the Master of the earth and the heavens and God-head belongs to Him alone: These two facts are eternal whether one believes them or not.”

After this introduction, the Surah abruptly moves on to relate the story of Prophet Moses without any apparent relevancy and without even hinting at its applicability to the events of the period. However, if we read between the lines, we realize that the discourse is addressed very relevantly to the people of Makkah. But before we explain the hidden meaning of the discourse, we must keep in view the fact that the Arabs in general acknowledged Moses as a Prophet of God. This was so because they had “been influenced by the large number of the Jews around them and by” the neighboring Christian kingdoms. Now let us state those things which are hidden between the lines of the story:

1. Allah does not appoint a Prophet by the beat of drums or My celebrating the occasion in a regular and formal ceremony, as if to say, “We are appointing such and such a person as Our Prophet from today.” On the contrary, He bestows Prophethood in a confidential manner just as He did in the case of Prophet Moses. Therefore you should not consider it strange if Hadrat Muhammad has been appointed as a Prophet all of a sudden and without any public proclamation.

2. The fundamental principles presented by Prophet Muhammad – Tauhid and the Hereafter – are just the same as were taught to Prophet Moses at the time of his appointment.

3. Prophet Muhammad has been made the standard bearer of the Message of the Truth among the people of the Quraish all by himself without material provisions, just as Prophet Moses was entrusted with the Mission to go to a tyrant king like Pharaoh and ask him to give up his attitude of rebellion. These are the mysterious ways of Allah. He catches hold of a way farer of Midian on his way to Egypt and says, “Go and fight with the greatest tyrant of the time.” He did not provide him with armies and provisions for this Mission. The only thing He did was to appoint his brother as his assistant at his request.

4. You, O People of Makkah, should note it well that Pharaoh employed the same devices against Prophet Moses as you are employing against Prophet Muhammad — frivolous objections, accusations, and cruel persecutions. You should know that Allah’s Prophet came out victorious over Pharaoh, who possessed large armies and war equipments. Incidentally, the Muslims have been consoled and comforted, though not in so many words, that they should not be afraid of fighting with the Quraish against fearful odds, for the mission which is supported by Allah comes out victorious in the end. At the same time, the Muslims have been exhorted to follow the excellent example of the magicians of Egypt, who remained steadfast in their Faith, though Pharaoh threatened them with horrible vengeance.

5. An incident from the story of the Israelites has been cited to show in what ridiculous manner the idolization of false gods and goddesses starts and that the Prophets of God do not tolerate even the slightest tinge of this preposterous practice. Likewise, Prophet Muhammad is following the former Prophets in opposing shirk and idol worship today.

Thus, the story of Moses has been used to throw light on all those matters which were connected with the conflict between the Holy Prophet and the Quraish. Then at the end of the story, the Quraish have been briefly admonished, as if to say, “The Quran has been sent down in your tongue for your own good. If you listen to it and follow its admonition, you will be doing so for your own good but if you reject it, you will yourselves meet with an evil end.” After this the story of Prophet Adam has been related, as if to tell the Quraish, “The way you are following is the way of Satan, whereas the right way for a man is to follow his father Adam. He was beguiled by Satan, but when he realized his error, he plainly confessed it and repented and again turned back to the service of Allah and won His favor. On the other hand, if a person follows Satan and sticks to his error obdurately in spite of admonition, he does harm to himself alone like Satan.”

In the end, the Holy Prophet and the Muslims have been advised not to be impatient in regard to the punishment to the disbelievers, as if to say, “Allah has His Own scheme concerning them. He does not seize them at once but gives them sufficient respite. Therefore you should not grow impatient but bear the persecutions with fortitude and go on conveying the Message.”

In this connection, great emphasis has been laid on Salat so that it may create in the believers the virtues of patience, forbearance, contentment, resignation to the will of God and self analysis for these are greatly needed in the service of the Message of the Truth.

Bevezetés a Ta-Ha (Ta-Ha) szúrához Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi - Tafhim al-Qur'an - A Korán Jelentése című munkája nyomán

Elnevezés

A Szúra a kezdő verssorban elhangzó Ta Ha után kapta a címét.

A kinyilatkoztatás ideje

Fordulj Allahhoz!”

A Szúra a Korán revelációjának kihirdetésével kezdődik: „Ó Mohammed!

Megtévesztette őt a Sátán.

(20 : 40)
40. “Behold! thy sister goeth forth and saith, ‘shall I show you one who will nurse and rear the (child)?’ So We brought thee back to thy mother, that her eye might be cooled and she should not grieve. Then thou didst slay a man, but We saved thee from trouble, and We tried thee in various ways. Then didst thou tarry a number of years with the people of Midian. Then didst thou come hither as ordained, O Moses [15]!

(20 : 41)
41. “And I have prepared thee for Myself (for service)”..

41. „És Magam számára készítettelek fel.”

(20 : 42)
42. “Go, thou and thy brother, with My Signs, and slacken not, either of you, in keeping Me in remembrance [16].

(20 : 43)
43. “Go, both of you, to Pharaoh, for he has indeed transgressed all bounds [17];

43. „Menjetek mindketten a Fáraóhoz, mert ő zsarnok [17].”

(20 : 44)
44. “But speak to him mildly; perchance he may take warning or fear ((Allah)) [18].”

44. „Szóljatok hozzá lágy szavakat, hátha magába száll és fél (Allahtól) [18].”

(20 : 45)
45. They (Moses and Aaron) said: “Our Lord! We fear lest he hasten with insolence against us, or lest he transgress all bounds [19].”

(20 : 46)
46. He said: “Fear not: for I am with you: I hear and see (everything).

46. Mondta: „Ne féljetek. Veletek vagyok, látok és hallok.”

(20 : 47)
47. “So go ye both to him, and say, ‘Verily we are apostles sent by thy Lord: Send forth, therefore, the Children of Israel with us, and afflict them not: with a Sign, indeed, have we come from thy Lord! and peace to all who follow guidance [20]!

(20 : 48)
48. “‘Verily it has been revealed to us that the Penalty (awaits) those who reject and turn away.'”

(20 : 49)
49. (When this message was delivered), (Pharaoh) said: “Who, then, O Moses, is the Lord of you two [21]?”

49. (Amikor a Fáraó meghallotta), így szólt: „Ki a ti Uratok, ó Mózes [21]?”

(20 : 50)
50. He said: “Our Lord is He Who gave to each (created) thing its form and nature, and further, gave (it) guidance [22].”

(20 : 51)
51. (Pharaoh) said: “What then is the condition of previous generations [23]?”

(20 : 52)
52. He replied: “The knowledge of that is with my Lord, duly recorded: my Lord never errs, nor forgets [24],-

52. Mondta: „Ennek tudása Uramnál van feljegyezve. Uram nem téveszt, és nem felejt [24].”

(20 : 53)
53. “He Who has, made for you the earth like a carpet spread out; has enabled you to go about therein by roads (and channels); and has sent down water from the sky.” With it have We produced diverse pairs of plants each separate from the others [25].

53. „Ő az, Ki megtette nektek a Földet bölcsőül, melyen kitaposta az utakat, lebocsátotta az Égből a vizet.” Előhoztuk általa az eltérő növénypárokat [25].

(20 : 54)
54. Eat (for yourselves) and pasture your cattle: verily, in this are Signs for men endued with understanding.

(20 : 55)
55. From the (earth) did We create you, and into it shall We return you, and from it shall We bring you out once again.

55. Ebből (Földből) teremtettünk, ebbe helyezünk vissza és ebből hozunk elő titeket újra.

(20 : 56)
56. And We showed Pharaoh all Our Signs, but he did reject and refuse [26].

(20 : 57)
57. He said: “Hast thou come to drive us out of our land with thy magic, O Moses [27]?

57. Mondta: „Azért jöttél tán, hogy mágiáddal kivezess minket Földünkről, ó Mózes [27]?”

(20 : 58)
58. “But we can surely produce magic to match thine! So make a tryst between us and thee, which we shall not fail to keep – neither we nor thou – in a place where both shall have even chances [28].”

(20 : 59)
59. Moses said: “Your tryst is the Day of the Festival, and let the people be assembled when the sun is well up [29].”

(20 : 60)
60. So Pharaoh withdrew: He concerted his plan, and then came (back).

60. A Fáraó visszavonult. Összetette tervét, majd előjött.

(20 : 61)
61. Moses said to him: Woe to you! Forge not ye a lie against Allah, lest He destroy you (at once) utterly by chastisement: the forger must suffer frustration [30]!”

(20 : 62)
62. So they disputed, one with another, over their affair, but they kept their talk secret [31].

62. Összekülönböztek dolgaikban maguk közt, de esküvésüket titkolták [31].

(20 : 63)
63. They said: “These two are certainly (expert) magicians: their object is to drive you out from your land with their magic, and to do away with your most cherished institutions.

(20 : 64)
64. “Therefore concert your plan, and then assemble in (serried) ranks: He wins (all along) today who gains the upper hand [32].”

64. „Ezért gyűjtsétek össze fondorlatotokat és jöjjetek sorban. Boldogul ma az, kik felülmarad [32].”

(20 : 65)
65. They said: “O Moses! whether wilt thou that thou throw (first) or that we be the first to throw?”

65. Mondták: „Vagy hajíts, vagy legyünk tán mi azok, kik először hajítanak?”

(20 : 66)
66. He said, “Nay, throw ye first!” Then behold their ropes and their rods-so it seemed to him on account of their magic – began to be in lively motion [33]!

66. Mondta: „Mi több! Hajítsatok! Úgy tűnt neki, mintha köteleik, botjaik, mágiájuk által mozognának [33].

(20 : 67)
67. So Moses conceived in his mind a (sort of) fear.

67. Félelem lett úrrá Mózesen belül.

(20 : 68)
68. We said: “Fear not! for thou hast indeed the upper hand:

68. Mondtuk: „Ne félj, mert te maradsz felül.”

(20 : 69)
69. “Throw that which is in thy right hand: Quickly will it swallow up that which they have faked what they have faked is but a magician’s trick: and the magician thrives not, (no matter) where he goes [34].”

(20 : 70)
70. So the magicians were thrown down to prostration: they said, “We believe in the Lord of Aaron and Moses”.

70. Levetették magukat a mágusok és leborulva mondták: „Hiszünk Áron és Mózes Istenében!”

(20 : 71)
71. (Pharaoh) said: “Believe ye in Him before I give you permission? Surely this must be your leader, who has taught you magic! be sure I will cut off your hands and feet on opposite sides, and I will have you crucified on trunks of palm-trees: so shall ye know for certain, which of us can give the more severe and the more lasting punishment [35]!”

(20 : 72)
72. They said: “Never shall we regard thee as more than the Clear Signs that have come to us, or than Him Who created us! so decree whatever thou desirest to decree: for thou canst only decree (touching) the life of this world [36].

(20 : 73)
73. “For us, we have believed in our Lord: may He forgive us our faults, and the magic to which thou didst compel us: for Allah is Best and Most Abiding [37].”

73. „Mi hiszünk Urunkban. Talán megbocsájtja hibáinkat és a mágiát, mire te kényszerítettél minket. Allah jobb és maradandóbb [37].”

(20 : 74)
74. Verily he who comes to his Lord as a sinner (at Judgment),- for him is Hell: therein shall he neither die nor live.

(20 : 75)
75. But such as come to Him as Believers who have worked righteous deeds,- for them are ranks exalted,-

(20 : 76)
76. Gardens of Eternity, beneath which flow rivers: they will dwell therein for aye: such is the reward of those who purify themselves (from evil).

76. Édeni Kertek, mik alatt folyók futnak, miben ők mindörökkön lesznek. Ez jussa annak, ki megtisztul.

(20 : 77)
77. We sent an inspiration to Moses: “Travel by night with My servants, and strike a dry path for them through the sea, without fear of being overtaken (by Pharaoh) and without (any other) fear [38].”

77. Sugallatot küldtünk Mózesnek, hogy: „Távozz éjjel a szolgálóimmal. Vágj nekik száraz utat a tengeren, ne tarts attól, hogy megelőznek, és ne félj [38].

(20 : 78)
78. Then Pharaoh pursued them with his forces, but the waters completely overwhelmed them and covered them up.

78. Üldözte őket a Fáraó a katonáival, de elborította őket a tenger, mi betakarta őket.

(20 : 79)
79. Pharaoh led his people astray instead of leading them aright.

(20 : 80)
80. O ye Children of Israel! We delivered you from your enemy, and We made a Covenant with you on the right side of Mount (Sinai), and We sent down to you Manna and quails [39]:

80. Ó, Izrael fiai! Megmenekítettünk titeket ellenségetektől, Szövetséget kötöttünk veletek a Hegy jobb oldalán és leküldtük nektek a mannát és fürjeket [39]:

(20 : 81)
81. (Saying): “Eat of the good things We have provided for your sustenance, but commit no excess therein, lest My Wrath should justly descend on you: and those on whom descends My Wrath do perish indeed [40]!

(20 : 82)
82. “But, without doubt, I am (also) He that forgives again and again, to those who repent, believe, and do right, who,- in fine, are ready to receive true guidance.”

82. „Bizony, Én megbocsájtok annak, ki bűnbánó, hisz, jókat tesz, majd kész beállni a helyes irányba.”

(20 : 83)
83. (When Moses was up on the Mount, Allah said:) “What made thee hasten in advance of thy people, O Moses [41]?”

83. (A Hegyen Allah így szólt Mózeshez): „Mi késztetett, hogy ide siess népedtől, ó Mózes [41]?”

(20 : 84)
84. He replied: “Behold, they are close on my footsteps: I hastened to thee, O my Lord, to please thee.”

84. Mondta: „Ők szorosan a nyomomban vannak. Azért siettem Hozzád, hogy elégedettségedet keressem.”

(20 : 85)
85. ((Allah)) said: “We have tested thy people in thy absence: the Samiri has led them astray [42].”

85. (Allah) így szólt: „Próbára tettük népedet távollétedben. Samiri tévelygésbe vezette őket [42].

(20 : 86)
86. So Moses returned to his people in a state of indignation and sorrow. He said: “O my people! did not your Lord make a handsome promise to you? Did then the promise seem to you long (in coming)? Or did ye desire that Wrath should descend from your Lord on you, and so ye broke your promise to me [43]?”

(20 : 87)
87. They said: “We broke not the promise to thee, as far as lay in our power: but we were made to carry the weight of the ornaments of the (whole) people, and we threw them (into the fire), and that was what the Samiri suggested.

(20 : 88)
88. “Then he brought out (of the fire) before the (people) the image of a calf: It seemed to low: so they said: This is your god, and the god of Moses, but (Moses) has forgotten [44]!”

(20 : 89)
89. Could they not see that it could not return them a word (for answer), and that it had no power either to harm them or to do them good?

(20 : 90)
90. Aaron had already, before this said to them: “O my people! ye are being tested in this: for verily your Lord is ((Allah)) Most Gracious; so follow me and obey my command [45].”

(20 : 91)
91. They had said: “We will not abandon this cult, but we will devote ourselves to it until Moses returns to us [46].”

(20 : 92)
92. (Moses) said: “O Aaron! what kept thee back, when thou sawest them going wrong,

92. (Mózes) így szólt: Ó, Áron! Mi tartott vissza, mikor láttad őket hogy rossz útra térnek,-”

(20 : 93)
93. “From following me? Didst thou then disobey my order [47]?”

93. „Hogy ne kövess engem? Engedetlen voltál parancsommal szemben [47]?”

(20 : 94)
94. (Aaron) replied: “O son of my mother! Seize (me) not by my beard nor by (the hair of) my head! Truly I feared lest thou shouldst say, ‘Thou has caused a division among the children of Israel, and thou didst not respect my word [48]!'”

(20 : 95)
95. (Moses) said: “What then is thy case, O Samiri?”

95. (Mózes) így szólt: „Mi tudsz mondani, ó Samiri?”

(20 : 96)
96. He replied: “I saw what they saw not: so I took a handful (of dust) from the footprint of the Messenger, and threw it (into the calf): thus did my soul suggest to me [49].”

(20 : 97)
97. (Moses) said: “Get thee gone! but thy (punishment) in this life will be that thou wilt say, ‘touch me not’; and moreover (for a future penalty) thou hast a promise that will not fail: Now look at thy god, of whom thou hast become a devoted worshipper: We will certainly (melt) it in a blazing fire and scatter it broadcast in the sea!”

(20 : 98)
98. But the god of you all is the One Allah. there is no god but He: all things He comprehends in His knowledge.

98. Istenetek Allah. Nincs más Isten, csak Ő. Tudása mindent átfog.

(20 : 99)
99. Thus do We relate to thee some stories of what happened before: for We have sent thee a Message from Our own Presence [50].

99. Ekképpen beszéljük el számodra a korábban megesett történéseket, miknek üzenetét megadtuk neked Színünkből [50].

(20 : 100)
100. If any do turn away therefrom, verily they will bear a burden on the Day of judgment;

100. Aki ettől elfordul, az a Feltámadás Napján terhet cipel.

(20 : 101)
101. They will abide in this (state): and grievous will the burden be to them on that Day,-

101. Ebben ők mindörökkön lesznek. Gyötrelmes nekik ez a teher a Feltámadás Napján.

(20 : 102)
102. The Day when the Trumpet will be sounded: that Day, We shall gather the sinful, blear-eyed (with terror).

102. A Napon megfúvatnak a fanfárok. Ezen a Napon összetereljük a bűnösöket könnyes szemekkel.

(20 : 103)
103. In whispers will they consult each other: “Yet tarried not longer than ten (Days) [51];

(20 : 104)
104. We know best what they will say, when their leader most eminent in conduct will say: “Ye tarried not longer than a day!”

(20 : 105)
105. They ask thee concerning the Mountains: say, “My Lord will uproot them and scatter them as dust [52];

(20 : 106)
106. “He will leave them as plains smooth and level;

106. „Meghagyja azt sivár síknak.”

(20 : 107)
107. “Nothing crooked or curved wilt thou see in their place.”

(20 : 108)
108. On that Day will they follow the Caller (straight): no crookedness (can they show) him: all sounds shall humble themselves in the Presence of ((Allah)) Most Gracious: nothing shalt thou hear but the tramp of their feet (as they march) [53].

(20 : 109)
109. On that Day shall no intercession avail except for those for whom permission has been granted by ((Allah)) Most Gracious and whose word is acceptable to Him.

(20 : 110)
110. He knows what (appears to His creatures as) before or after or behind them: but they shall not compass it with their knowledge.

(20 : 111)
111. (All) faces shall be humbled before (Him) – the Living, the Self-Subsisting, Eternal: hopeless indeed will be the man that carries iniquity (on his back) [54].

111. Meghunyászkodnak az arcok az Élő, az Örökkévaló előtt. Reménytelen az, ki bűnt hordoz [54].

(20 : 112)
112. But he who works deeds of righteousness, and has faith, will have no fear of harm nor of any curtailment (of what is his due) [55].

(20 : 113)
113. Thus have We sent this down – an arabic Qur’an – and explained therein in detail some of the warnings, in order that they may fear Allah, or that it may cause their remembrance (of Him) [56].

113. Ekképpen bocsátottuk le neki az Arab Koránt, miben részleteztük néhány ígéretünket, hátha tán őrizkednek, vagy arra készteti őket, hogy magukba szálljanak [56].

(20 : 114)
114. High above all is Allah, the King, the Truth! Be not in haste with the Qur’an before its revelation to thee is completed, but say, “O my Lord! advance me in knowledge [57].”

(20 : 115)
115. We had already, beforehand, taken the covenant of Adam, but he forgot: and We found on his part no firm resolve [58].

(20 : 116)
116. When We said to the angels, “Prostrate yourselves to Adam”, they prostrated themselves, but not Iblis: he refused.

116. Mikor mondtuk az Angyaloknak: „Boruljatok le Ádám előtt!” Leborultak, csak Iblisz nem, aki dacolt.

(20 : 117)
117. Then We said: “O Adam! verily, this is an enemy to thee and thy wife: so let him not get you both out of the Garden, so that thou art landed in misery [59].

(20 : 118)
118. “There is therein (enough provision) for thee not to go hungry nor to go naked [60],

(20 : 119)
119. “Nor to suffer from thirst, nor from the sun’s heat.”

(20 : 120)
120. But Satan whispered evil to him: he said, “O Adam! shall I lead thee to the Tree of Eternity and to a kingdom that never decays [61]?”

(20 : 121)
121. In the result, they both ate of the tree, and so their nakedness appeared to them: they began to sew together, for their covering, leaves from the Garden: thus did Adam disobey his Lord, and allow himself to be seduced [62].

121. Mindketten ettek arról (a fáról) és felderült nekik szégyenük (csupaszságuk). Takarást öltöttek maguknak össze a Kert leveleiből.

(20 : 122)
122. But his Lord chose him (for His Grace): He turned to him, and gave him Guidance.

(20 : 123)
123. He said: “Get ye down, both of you,- all together, from the Garden, with enmity one to another: but if, as is sure, there comes to you Guidance from Me, whosoever follows My Guidance, will not lose his way, nor fall into misery [63].

(20 : 124)
124. “But whosoever turns away from My Message, verily for him is a life narrowed down, and We shall raise him up blind on the Day of Judgment.”

124. „Aki elfordul Üzenetemtől, annak szűkös lesz megélhetése és a Feltámadás Napján vakon támasztjuk fel.”

(20 : 125)
125. He will say: “O my Lord! why hast Thou raised me up blind, while I had sight (before) [64]?”

125. Mondja: „Uram! Miért támasztottál fel vakon, mikor én láttam [64]?”

(20 : 126)
126. ((Allah)) will say: “Thus didst Thou, when Our Signs came unto thee, disregard them: so wilt thou, this day, be disregarded.”

126. (Allah) így szól: „Te is így tettél! Mikor eljöttek hozzád Áyáink, megfeledkeztél róluk. Ekképpen vagy te is elfeledve ma.”

(20 : 127)
127. And thus do We recompense him who transgresses beyond bounds and believes not in the Signs of his Lord: and the Penalty of the Hereafter is far more grievous and more enduring.

(20 : 128)
128. Is it not a warning to such men (to call to mind) how many generations before them We destroyed, in whose haunts they (now) move? Verily, in this are Signs for men endued with understanding [65].

(20 : 129)
129. Had it not been for a Word that went forth before from thy Lord, (their punishment) must necessarily have come; but there is a Term appointed (for respite) [66].

(20 : 130)
130. Therefore be patient with what they say, and celebrate (constantly) the praises of thy Lord, before the rising of the sun, and before its setting; yea, celebrate them for part of the hours of the night, and at the sides of the day: that thou mayest have (spiritual) joy [67].

(20 : 131)
131. Nor strain thine eyes in longing for the things We have given for enjoyment to parties of them, the splendour of the life of this world, through which We test them: but the provision of thy Lord is better and more enduring.

(20 : 132)
132. Enjoin prayer on thy people, and be constant therein. We ask thee not to provide sustenance: We provide it for thee. But the (fruit of) the Hereafter is for righteousness [68].

(20 : 133)
133. They say: “Why does he not bring us a sign from his Lord?” Has not a Clear Sign come to them of all that was in the former Books of revelation [69]?

(20 : 134)
134. And if We had inflicted on them a penalty before this, they would have said: “Our Lord! If only Thou hadst sent us an apostle, we should certainly have followed Thy Signs before we were humbled and put to shame.”

(20 : 135)
135. Say: “Each one (of us) is waiting: wait ye, therefore, and soon shall ye know who it is that is on the straight and even way, and who it is that has received Guidance [70].”

[1] Allah’s revelation may cause some human trouble for two reasons: – it checks man’s selfishness and narrowness of view, and – it annoys the wicked and causes them to jeer and persecute.

2. Bosszantja a gaztevőt és gúnyolódásra, a jó úton levők üldözésére készteti, mert vélt fizikai fölénnyel ellensúlyozza saját gyengeségét.

[2] 10:3. If things seem to be wrong in our imperfect vision on this earth, we must remember Allah, Who encompasses all Creation and sits on the throne of Grace and Mercy, is in command, and our Faith tells us that all must be right. Allah’s authority is not like an authority on earth, which may be questioned, or which may not last. His authority is “firmly established”.

[3] Whatever you profess, or say aloud, gives no information to Allah: He knows not only what is secret and perhaps unknown to others.

[3] Bármit kijelentesz, mondasz, nem abból tájékozódik Allah. Ő ismeri a legrejtettebb titkokat, melyek más elől zárva vannak.

[4] The story of Moses in its different incidents is told in many places in the Quran, and in each case the phase most appropriate in the context is referred to or emphasised. – In 2:49-61, it was a phase from the religious history of mankind; – in 7:103-162, it was a phase from the story of the Ummah (or nation) of Israel, and the story was continued to the times after Moses, – in 17:101-103, we have a picture of the decline of a soul in the arrogance of Pharaoh; – here, in 20:9-24, we have a picture of the rise of a soul in the commission given to Moses from Allah; – in 20:25-36, we have his spiritual relationship with his brother Aaron; – in 20:37-40, we have his spiritual relation with his mother and sister, and his upbringing; – in 20:41-76, we have his spiritual combat with Pharaoh; and – in 20:77-98, we have his spiritual combat with his own people, the Israelites.

[4] Mózes történetét a Korán több helyén is megtaláljuk, de mindig más kontextusban. 1. a 2:49-61-ben az emberiség vallástörténelmével kapcsolatban. 2. A 7:103-162 Izrael népének történetét olvashatjuk, melynek szerves része Mózes. 3. A 17:101-103-ban a Fáraó mintáján keresztül érzékeljük a lélek torzulását. 4. Itt, a 20:9-24-ben láthatjuk, miként örvend a lélek, ha Allah küldetést szán neki. 5. A 20:25-36 bemutatja a spirituális kapcsolatot fivérével, Áronnal. 5. A 20:37-40 láttatja kötelékét anyjával és nővérével. 6. 20:41-76-ban szemünk elé tárul spirituális csatája a Fáraóval. 7. 20:77-98-ban a saját népével folytatott spirituális harcról olvashatunk.

[5] A fire: It appeared like an ordinary fire, which always betokens the presence of men in a desert or a lonely place. Moses made for it alone, to fetch the wherewithal for making a fire for his family, and perhaps to find some direction as to the way, from the people he should meet there. But it was not an ordinary fire. It was a Burning Bush: a Sign of the Glory of Allah.

The spiritual history of Moses begins here. It was the beginning of his mission. His physical life, infancy, and upbringing are referred to later on, to illustrate another point. Moses, when he grew up, left the palace of Pharaoh and went to the Midianite people, in the Sinai peninsula. He married among them, and was now traveling with his family, when he was called to his mission by Allah. He went to look for a fire for comfort and guidance. He found a higher and holier comfort and guidance. The whole passage is full of portent meaning, which is reflected in the short rhymed verses in the original.

[6] The shoes are to be put off as a mark of respect. Moses was now to put away his mere worldly interests, he having been chosen by Allah, the Most High. This was the valley just below Mount Sinai, where subsequently he was to receive the Torah.

[6] A saruk levétele a hely tiszteletének jele. Mózesnek le kellett mondania a földi örömökről, mert Allah kiválasztotta őt. A Sinai Hegy egyik völgyében vagyunk, ahol Mózes megkapja a Tórát.

[7] The first need is to mend our lives and worship and serve Allah, as in the last verse. The next is to realise the meaning of the Hereafter, when every soul will get the meed of its conduct in this life.

[8] Moses had yet to meet the formidable opposition of the arrogant, Pharaoh and his proud Egyptians. In receiving his commission, he is warned of both dangers. This relates to man’s own soul: when once the light reaches him, let him hold fast to it lest he perish. He will be beset with dangers of all kinds around him, the worst will be the danger of unbelieving people who seem to thrive on their selfishness and in following their own vain desires!

[9] 7:107, where a different word (thu’ban) is used for “snake” and the qualifying adjective is “plain (for all to see)”. The scene there is before Pharaoh and his magicians and people: the object is to show the hollowness of their magic by a miracle: the rod appears before them as a long and creeping writhing serpent. Here there is a symbol to present Allah’s power to Moses’ mind and understanding: the rod becomes a Hayy (a live snake), and its “live motion is what is most to be impressed on the mind of Moses, for there were no other spectators. So the highest spiritual mysteries can be grasped, with Allah’s gift of insight, from the most ordinary things of daily use. Once they are grasped, there is no question of fear.

[10] The second of the greater Miracles shown to Moses was the “White (shining) Hand”. Ordinarily, when the skin becomes white, it is a sign of disease, leprosy or something loathsome. Here there was no question of disease: on the contrary, the hand was glorified, and it shone as with a divine light. Such a miracle was beyond Egyptian or human magic.

[10] A másik nagy csoda, a fehér, tündöklő kéz. Itt a betegségnek semmi jele. A kéz isteni fényt bocsátott ki magából, ami túlment az Egyiptomi mágia szemfényvesztésen alapuló trükkjein.

[11] Moses, having been spiritually prepared now gets his definite commission to go to Pharaoh and point out the error of his ways. So inordinate was Pharaoh’s vanity that he had it in his mind to say: “I am your Lord Most High!” (79:24)

[11] Mózes túlesett a spirituális felkészítésen és most parancsot kap. „Én vagyok a te magasságos urad!” (79:24).

[12] The requests that Moses makes are inspired, not by earthly but by spiritual motives. The motive, expressed in the most general terms, is to glorify Allah, not in an occasional way, but systematically and continuously, “without stint”. The clauses in this verse and the next, taken together, govern all the requests he makes, from verse 25 to verse 32.

Mózes kéréseit a 25-32 versek összegzik. Kérései is a küldetéssel kapcsolatosak, egyik sem kapcsolódik önös célhoz.

[13] The story is not told, but only those salient points recapitulated which bear on the upbringing and work of Moses. Long after the age of Joseph, who had been a Wazir to one of the Pharaohs, there came on the throne of Egypt a Pharaoh who hated the Israelites and wanted them annihilated. He ordered Israelite male children to be killed when they were born. Moses’ mother hid him for a time, but when further concealment was impossible, a thought came into her mind that she should put her child into a chest and send the chest floating down the Nile. This was not merely a foolish fancy of hers. It was Allah’s Plan to bring up Moses in all the learning of the Egyptians, in order that that learning itself should be used to expose what was wrong in it and to advance the glory of Allah. The chest was floated into the river Nile. It flowed on into a stream that passed through Pharaoh’s Garden. It was picked up by Pharaoh’s people and the child was adopted by Pharaoh’s wife. See 28:4-13.

A kosarat a Nílus a Fáraó kertjénél sodorta partra. A Fáraó emberei kiemelték és a gyermeket a Fáraó felesége magához vette. Lásd 28:4-13.

[14] Pharaoh was an enemy to Allah, because he was puffed up and he blasphemed, claiming to be God himself. He was an enemy to the child Moses, because he hated the Israelites and wanted to have their male children killed.

By making the child Moses so attractive as to be adopted into Pharaoh’s household, not only was Moses brought up in the best way possible from an earthly point of view, but Allah’s special Providence looked after him in bringing his mother to him, as stated in the next verse, and thus nourishing him on his mother’s milk and keeping him in touch, in his inner growth, with the feelings and sentiments of his people Israel.

[15] We may suppose that the anxious mother, after the child was floated on the water, sent the child’s sister to follow the chest from the bank and see where and by whom it was picked up. When it was picked up by Pharaoh’s own family and they seemed to love the child, she appeared like a stranger before them, and said, “Shall I search out a good wet-nurse for the child, that she may rear the child you are going to adopt?” That was exactly what they wanted. She ran home and told her mother. The mother was delighted to come and fold the infant in her arms again and feed it at her own breast, and all openly and without any concealment.

[16] We may suppose that Moses had fled alone to the land of Midian, and that he had now come alone (with his family but not with his brother) to Tuwa.

[17] Their mission was in the first instance to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians, and then to lead Israel out of Egypt.

[18] So far Pharaoh in his inordinate vanity had forgotten himself and forgotten how small a creature he was before Allah. This was to be brought to his recollection, so that he might perhaps repent and believe, or at least be deterred by fear from “transgressing all bounds”.

[19] They were now in Egypt and therefore in the power of the Pharaoh. The local atmosphere called for the greatest courage and firmness on their part to carry out the dangerous mission which had been entrusted to them.

[19] A jelenet Egyiptomban játszódik, ahol a Fáraó gyakorol hatalmat felettük. A Fáraótól való félelemből rájuk ragad valami, ahogy mindenki fél Egyiptomban. Több bátorságra lenne szükségük küldetésük teljesítéséhez.

[20] The Children of Israel were subjected to all sorts of oppression and indignities. They were given hard tasks; their leaders were unjustly beaten; they were forced to make bricks without straw; and they “groaned in bondage” (Exodus 5:6-19. Exodus 6:5).

[20] Izrael gyermekeit elnyomták és megalázták. Vezetőiket megkínozták, ők pedig vályogot dagasztottak a szalma nélküli téglához. A Zsidók szenvedtek a rabság igája alatt. (Kivonulás 5:6-19, Kivonulás 6:5)

[21] Pharaoh implicitly repudiates the suggestion that the God who had sent Moses and Aaron could possibly be Pharaoh’s Lord. He asks insolently, “Who is this Lord of yours, of Whom ye speak as having sent you?”

[22] The answer of Moses is straightforward, dignified, and illuminating. He will not dispute about “my Lord” or “your Lord,” the God of Israel, or the God of Egypt. He and his brother were proud to serve “our Lord,” but He was the universal Lord and Cherisher, the One and Only God, Who had created all beings and all things. It was from Him that each created thing derived its form and nature, including such free-will and power as man had got. He, Pharaoh, was subject to the same condition. In order that the free-will should be rightly exercised, Allah had given guidance through His Messengers, and His Signs. Moses and Aaron stood as such Messengers, with such Signs. Will Pharaoh now understand and do right?

A Fáraó is alanya ennek a teremtésnek.

[23] But Pharaoh was not the man to accept teaching from the despised Israelite- one, too, who in his eyes was a renegade from the higher Egyptian civilisation. If there is only one God, to Whom all things are referred, this is a new religion. What of the religion of our ancestors? Were they wrong in worshipping the Egyptian gods? And if they were wrong, are they in misery now? He wanted to trap Moses into a scathing denunciation of his ancestors, which would at once have deprived him of the sympathy or the hearing of the Egyptian crowd.

Ha rossz úton jártak, akkor most kínszenvedés a sorsuk?

[24] Moses did not fall into the trap. He remembered the injunction given to him to speak mildly (20:44). He speaks mildly, but does not in any way whittle down the truth.

[25] This seems to be outside the speech of Moses, and connects itself with the following verses 54-56, as part of the Word of Allah, expanding the speech of Moses and explaining the working of Allah’s Providence in nature.

[26] This is a sort of general introduction to the confrontation between Moses and Pharaoh. The Signs are not only the countering of the fraudulent magic of Egypt with real miracles, but the subsequent Plagues (not mentioned here) and the Crossing of the Red Sea by Israel.

[27] The Egyptians accused Moses of a design to deprive them of their land, and of exercising black magic. Both charges were palpably false. What Moses wanted to do was to free his people from bondage. The Egyptians had all the power in their possession. As to magic, the Egyptians judged Moses by themselves. They accused the Prophet of Allah of doing the same, though both his outlook and the source of his strength were altogether different.

[28] Suwan: literally, ‘equal, even’. It has been construed to mean: – a place equally distant for both sides, a central place, or – an open level plain, where the people can collect with ease.

[29] Moses makes this appointment in order to collect as large a number as possible, for his first duty is to preach the Truth. And he apparently did it with some effect with some Egyptians (20:70, 72-76).

(20:70, 72-76).

[30] Moses had some idea of their trickery and deceit. They would palm off their fraudulent magic as coming from Allah or from their gods! He warns them that their tricks will stand exposed, and their hopes will be defeated.

[30] Mózes tudta, hogy trükkökben, ámításban gondolkodnak. Amit ő tud nyújtani, az Allahtól való és lerántja a leplet mindarról a szemfényvesztésről, amit a mágusok produkálnak. Erre figyelmezteti őket Mózes.

[31] They knew that they had here to deal with no ordinary man, but a man with powers above what they could conceive of. But evil always thinks evil. Judging Moses and Aaron by their own standards, they thought that these two were also tricksters, with some tricks superior to their own. All they had to do was to stand together, and they must win.

[32] Presumably Pharaoh was in this secret conference, and he promises the most lavish rewards to the magicians if they overcome Moses. See 7:114. That day was to be the crisis: if they won then, they would win all along, and Moses and his people would be crushed.

[33] Their bag of tricks was so clever that it imposed upon all beholders. Their ropes and their rods were thrown, and seemed to move about like snakes. So realistic was the effect that even Moses felt the least bit of doubt in his own mind. He of course had no tricks, and he relied entirely on Allah.

[34] 1. That falsehood and trickery may have their day, but they cannot win everywhere, especially in the presence of Truth, or – that trickery and magic must come to an evil end.

A megtévesztés midig bukással zárul.

[35] Pharaoh accuses his sorcerers who have been converted, of having been in league with Moses all the time, and in fact of having been led and taught by him! So arrogance and evil cannot conceive of Allah’s worlds and worlds of beauty and truth beyond its own narrow vision! It is truly blind and its very cleverness deludes it to wander fat from the truth.

[36] Clear Signs:
– the miracles,
– the personality of the Messengers of Allah,
– the logic of events as they unfolded themselves, and
– the light of inner conviction in their own conscience.
There are in addition the Signs and Proofs of Allah in nature, which are referred to in many places, e.g., 20:53-54.

Thus was the first part of the mission of Moses that to the Egyptians- fulfilled. See 7:126; also Appendix after Surah Al-Araf (The Heights).

[36] Jelek, Áyák:
1. Csodák.
2. Allah Prófétáinak személyisége.
3. Az események bekövetkezésének logikája.
4. Meggyőződés fényének meggyúlása a lelkiismeretben.
Emellett még a számtalan Jel és Bizonyság a természetben, amire sok helyen találunk utalást, pl. 20:53-54.

Ezzel Mózes és Áron Egyiptomi küldetésének első szakasza lezárult. Lásd 7:126, valamit a 7. Al-Araf (Magaslatok) Szúrát követő függeléket.

[37] The magic mummery, and deceptions which pertained to Egyptian Pagan religion became a creed, a State article of faith, to which all citizens were compelled to bow, and which its priests were compelled actively to practice. And Pharaoh was at the head of the whole system-the high priest or the supreme god. With justice, therefore, do the converted magicians lay the blame on Pharaoh, effectively negativing Pharaoh’s disingenuous charge that they had been in league with Moses.

[38] Time passes, and at last Moses is commanded to leave Egypt with his people by night. They were to cross the Red Sea into the Sinai Peninsula. They were told to have no fear of Pharaoh or of the sea or of the unknown desert country of Sinai into which they were going. They crossed dry-shod, while Pharaoh who came in pursuit with his troops was overwhelmed by the sea. He and his men all perished. There is no emphasis on this episode here. But the emphasis is laid on the hard task which Moses had with his own people after he had delivered them from the Egyptian bondage.

Száraz lábbal keltek át a tengeren, míg a Fáraót és katonáit ellepték a hullámok. Ő és emberei mind megsemmisültek. Az epizódra itt nem esik hangsúly. Itt Mózes feladata, népének Egyiptomi rabságból való kiszabadítása kap jelentőséget.

[39] Right side: 19:52, towards the end. The Arabian side of Sinai (Jabal Musa) was the place where Moses first received his commission before going to Egypt, and also where he received the Torah after the Exodus from Egypt.

[39] Jobb oldal: 19:52.

[40] 2:57; and 7:160. I should like to construe this not only literally but also metaphorically. ‘Allah has looked after you and saved you. He has given you ethical and spiritual guidance. Enjoy the fruits of all this, but do not become puffed up and rebellious otherwise the Wrath of Allah is sure to descend on you.’

[41] This was when Moses was up on the Mount for forty days and forty nights: 2:51. Moses had left the elders of Israel with Aaron behind him: Exodus 24:14. While he was in a state of ecstatic honour on the Mount, his people were enacting strange scenes down below. They were tested and tried, and they failed in the trial. They made a golden calf for worship, as described below. See also 7:148-150.

Lást itt is: 7:148-150.

[42] Who was this Samiri? If we look to old Egyptian, we have Shemer: A stranger, foreigner. As the Israelites had just left Egypt, they might quite well have among them an Egyptianised Hebrew bearing that nickname. That the name Shemer was subsequently not unknown among the Hebrews is clear from the Old Testament. In 1 Kings 16:24 we read that Omri, king of Israel, the northern portion of the divided kingdom, who reigned about 903-896 B.C., built a new city, Samaria, on a hill which he bought from Shemer, the owner of the hill, for two talents of silver.

[43] There are two promises referred to in this verse, the promise of Allah and the promise of the people of Israel. They form one Covenant, which was entered into through their leader Moses. See 20:80, and 2:63. Allah’s promise was to protect them and lead them to the Promised Land, and their promise was to obey Allah’s Law and His commandments.

[44] Moses has forgotten: i.e., ‘forgotten both us and his god. He has been gone for so many days. He is searching for a god on the Mount when his god is really here!’ This is spoken by the Samiri and his partisans, but the people as a whole accepted it, and it therefore, becomes their speech.

[45] “Resist this temptation: you are being tested in this. Do not follow after the semi-Egyptian Samiri, but obey me.”

The Bible story makes Aaron the culprit, which is inconsistent with his office as the high priest of Allah and the right hand of Moses. See 7:150. Our version is more consistent, and explains, through the example of the Samiri, the lingering influences of the Egyptian cult of Osiris the bull-god.

[45] Álljatok ellen, Uratok próbára tesz csupán! Ne kövessétek a fél-Egyiptomi Samirit, hanem nekem engedelmeskedjetek!

[46] Obviously Aaron’s speech in the last verse, and the rebels’ defiance in this verse, were spoken before the return of Moses from the Mount.

[47] Moses, when he came back, was full of anger and grief. His speech to Aaron is one of rebuke, and he was also inclined to handle him roughly.

[47] Amikor Mózes visszaért, elkeseredett és haragra gyúlt. Rendre utasítja, megszidja Áront, durván bánt vele.

[48] This reply of Aaron’s is in no way inconsistent with the reply as noted in 7:150. On the contrary there is a dramatic aptness in the different points emphasised on each occasion. In Surah 7, we were discussing the Ummah of Israel, and Aaron rightly says, “The people did indeed reckon me as naught, and went near to slay me!” In addition, “Let not the enemies rejoice over my misfortune” he is referring by implication to his brother’s wish to maintain unity among the people. Here the unity is the chief point to emphasize: we are dealing with the Samiri as mischief-monger, and he could best be dealt with by Moses, who proceeds to do so.

A 7. Szúrában Izrael Népének engedetlensége állt a központban, akik Mózes távollétében Áront semmibe vették.

[49] This answer of the Samiri is a fine example of unblushing effrontery, careful evasion of issues, and invented falsehoods. He takes upon himself to pretend that he had far more insight than anybody else: he saw what the crowd did not see. He saw something supernatural. “The Messenger” is construed by many Commentators to mean the angel Gabriel. Rasul (plural, rusul) is used in several places for “angels” e.g., in 11:69, 77; 19:19; and 35:1. But if we take it to mean the Messenger Moses, it means that the Samiri saw something sacred or supernatural in his footprints: perhaps he thinks a little flattery would make Moses forgive him. The dust became sacred, and his throwing it into the calf made the calf utter a lowing sound! As if that was the point at issue! He does not answer the charge of making an image for worship. But finally, with arrogant effrontery, he says, “Well, that is what my soul suggested to me, and that should be enough!”

[50] Thus superseding previous revelations; for this (the Quran) is direct from Allah, and is not a secondhand exposition on other men’s authority.

[50] Az előző kinyilatkoztatásokat felváltja a Korán, mely közvetlenül Allahtól jön, emberi beavatkozás nem változtatott rajta semmit.

[51] Faced with eternity they will realise that their life on this earth, or the interval between their sin and their punishment, had a duration which practically amounted to nothing. They express this by the phrase “ten days”, but their wiser heads think that even this is an over-estimate. It was but a brief day!

[52] In the last verse, it was the deceptiveness and relativity of Time that was dealt with. Here we come to the question of space, solidity, bulk. The question was actually put to the holy Prophet: what will become of the solid Mountains, or in the English phrase, “the eternal hills”? They are no more substantial than anything else in this temporal world. When the “new world”, (13:5) of which Unbelievers doubted, is actually in being, the mountains will cease to exist. We can imagine the scene of judgment as a level plain, in which there are no ups and downs and no places of concealment. All is straight and level, without comers, mysteries, or lurking doubts.

Itt a térről beszélünk. Nincs „tere” a titkoknak, kétségeknek, megtévesztésnek.

[53] A beautiful personification of hushed Sound. First there is the loud blast of the Trumpet. Then there is the stillness and hush of awe and reverence: only the tramp of the ranks marching along will be heard.

[54] The metaphor of the burden of sin which the unjust carry on their backs is referred to in 20:100-101 (see in 6:31, and in other passages).

[55] Unlike the unjust, the righteous, who have come with Faith, will now find their Faith justified: not only will they be free from any fear of harm, but they will be rewarded to the full, or, as has been said in other passages, where His bounty rather than His justice is emphasised, they will get more than their due reward (3:27; 39:10).

(3:27, 39:10).

[56] The Quran is in clear Arabic, so that even an unlearned people like the Arabs might understand and profit by its warnings, and the rest of the world may learn through them, as they did in the first few centuries of Islam and may do again when we Muslims show ourselves worthy to explain and exemplify its meaning. In the history there was a period of time when we Muslims were worth to explain the Truth. These days of today don’t belong to this period of time.

[56] A Korán tiszta, Arab nyelven szól.

[57] Allah is above every human event or desire. His purpose is universal. But He is the Truth, the absolute Truth; and His kingdom is the true kingdom, that can carry out its will. That Truth unfolds itself gradually, as it did in the gradual revelation of the Quran to the holy Prophet. But even after it was completed in a volume, its true meaning and purpose only gradually unfold themselves to any given individual or nation. No one should be impatient about it. On the contrary, we should always pray for increase in our own knowledge, which can never at any given moment be complete.

[58] The spiritual fall of two individual souls, Pharaoh and the Samiri, having been referred to, the one through overweening arrogance, and the other through a spirit of mischief and false harking back to the past, our attention is now called to the prototype of Evil (Satan) who tempted Adam, the original Man, and to the fact that though man was clearly warned that Satan is his enemy and will only effect his ruin, he showed so little firmness that he succumbed to it at once at the first opportunity.

Most a gonosz prototípusával, a Sátánnal találkozunk, aki az eredendő bűnbeesést előidézte.

[59] The story is referred to in order to draw attention to man’s folly in rushing into the arms of Satan though he had been clearly forewarned.

[60] Not only had the warning been given that Satan is an enemy to man and will effect his destruction, but it was clearly pointed out that all his needs were being met in the Garden of Happiness. Food and clothing, drink and shelter, were amply provided for.

[61] The suggestion of Satan is clever, as it always is: it is false, and at the same time plausible. It is false, because; – that felicity was not temporary, like the life of this world, and – they were supreme in the Garden, and a “kingdom” such as was dangled before them would only add to their sorrows. It was plausible, because; – nothing had been said to them about Eternity, as the opposite of Eternity was not yet known, and – the sweets of Power arise from the savour of Self, and Self is an alluring (if false) attraction that misleads the Will.

Most a Sátán megemlítette, tehát megszületett a fogalom is és elgondolkodtatta Ádámot. 2.

[62] Hitherto they knew no evil. Now, when disobedience to Allah had sullied their soul and torn off the garment, their sullied Self appeared to themselves in all its nakedness and ugliness, and they had to resort to external things (leaves of the Garden) to cover the shame of their self-consciousness..

Adam had been given the will to choose, and he chose wrong, and was about to be lost when Allah’s Grace came to his aid. His repentance was accepted, and Allah chose him for His Mercy, as stated in the next verse.

[62] Megismerték a bűnt.

[63] The little variations between this passage and 2:38 are instructive, as showing how clearly the particular argument is followed in each case. Here ihbita (‘get ye down’) is in the dual number, and refers to the two individual souls, our common ancestors. In 2:38 ihbitu is in the plural number, to include all mankind and Satan, for the argument is about the collective life of man. On the other hand, “all together” includes Satan, the spirit of evil, and the enmity “one to another” refers to the eternal feud between Man and Satan, between our better and Evil.

Itt kettes számban fogalmaz, „Ihbita”, azaz a két individuális lélek, a mi két ősszülőnk felé szól a parancs.

[64] Because Allah gave him physical sight in this life for trial, he thinks he should be favoured in the real world, the world that matters! He misused his physical sight and made himself blind for the other world.

[65] 20:54. This phrase concluded the argument of Moses with Pharaoh about Pharaoh’s blindness to Allah and the Signs of Allah. Now it concludes the more general argument about men, concerning whom the saying arose: ‘none are so blind as those who will not see.’

[66] The most wicked have a term appointed for them for respite. Had it not been so, the punishment must necessarily have descended on them immediately for their evil deeds.

[67] All good men must be patient with what seems to them evil around them. That does not mean that they should sit still and do nothing to destroy evil; for the fight against evil is one of the cardinal points in Islam. They must pray to Allah and commune with Him, so that their patience and faith may be strengthened, and they may be able the better to grapple with evil.

The prayer before sunrise is clearly Fajr; – that before sunset is Asr: “part of the hours of the night” – would indicate Maghrib (early night, just after sunset), – and Isha, before going to bed. There is left Zuhr, which is in the indefinite side or middle of the day.

A Napfelkelte előtti ima a Fadzsr, hajnali ima.

[68] Sustenance, in the sense of ordinary needs of life, the man of Allah does not worry about. That is provided by Allah for all, the just and the unjust. But the special provision, the real Sustenance, the spiritual fruit, is for a righteous life in the service of Allah.

[68] Ami a mindennapi életünkről való gondoskodást illeti, Allah törődik velünk.
