Introduction to Surah Al-Fatihah with Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi - Tafhim al-Qur'an - The Meaning of the Qur'an

Surah Al-Fatiha is the Greatest Surah of Quran which has many names

  • Al-Fatihah: The Opening. It opens the Book and by it the recitation in prayer commences.
  • Umm al-Quran: Mother of the Quran
  • Umm al-Kitab Mother of the Book. Al-Bukhari said in the beginning of the Book of Tafsir in his Sahih: “It is named Umm al-Quran because it is the first chapter written in the Quranic texts and the recitation in prayer commences with it.”
  • Sab’ul-Mathani:The Seven Oft Repeated Verses because they are frequently recited and indeed recited in every rakaah of the prayer. Allah says in the Quran:

“And indeed, We have bestowed upon you seven of Al-Mathani (the seven repeatedly recited Verses), (i.e. Surat Al-Fatiha) and the Grand Quran. [Quran: Surah Al-Hijr (87)]” (Tafsir of Surah Al-Hijr).

This Surah consists of seven ayas.

  • Al-Hamd: Praises to Allah.
  • As-Salah: The Prayer.
  • Ash-Shifa: Cure for healing.
  • Ar-Ruqyah: Spiritual Cure
  • Asas al-Quran: The Foundation of the Quran.
  • Other scholars have also named it as Al-Kanz (the Treasure), Ash-Shukr (Gratitude), ad-Dua (Supplication), Ash-Shafiyah (the Intercessor), Al-Kafiyah (the Sufficient), Al-Wafiyah, the Fulfillment and more.

What is the message of Surah Al-Fatiha in our time?

It is always opening. Opening The Book, prayer and also our boundaries. In other words this Surah liberates us and lifts human to another dimension of thinking and existence. This is the dimension where we are the nearest to Allah. The Surah is not speaking about Prophets, humans or history. It leads us to the Worlds where Allah is the only Lord. As if we reached to hereafter when we recite this Surah. While we worship Surah Al-Fatiha we can get rid of everyday struggle and poverty and gives us hope. It liberates us and leads us to the Worlds where we are free under His reign.

Name

This Surah is named Al-Fatiha because of its subject-matter.

Period of Revelation

It is one of the very earliest Revelations to the Holy Prophet. As a matter of fact, we learn from authentic Traditions that it was the first complete Surah which was revealed to Muhammad (Allah’s peace be upon him). Before this, only a few miscellaneous verses were revealed which form parts of `Alaq, Muzzammil, Muddaththir, etc.

Theme

This Surah is in fact a prayer which Allah has taught to all those who want to make a study of His book. It has been placed at the very beginning of the book to teach this lesson to the reader: if you sincerely want to benefit from the Quran, you should offer this prayer to the Lord of the Universe.

This preface is meant to create a strong desire in the heart of the reader to seek guidance from the Lord of the Universe, Who alone can grant it. Thus Al-Fatihah indirectly teaches that the best thing for a man is to pray for guidance to the straight path, to study the Quran with the mental attitude of a seeker- after-truth and to recognize the fact that the Lord of the Universe is the source of all knowledge. He should, therefore, begin the study of the Quran with a prayer to him for guidance. From this theme, it becomes clear that the real relation between Al-Fatihah and the Quran is not that of an introduction to a book but that of a prayer and its answer. Al-Fatihah is the prayer from the servant and the Quran is the answer from the Master to his prayer.

Bevezetés a Fatiha (Imrán Nemzetsége) Szúrához Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi - Tafhim al-Qur'an – A Korán Jelentése c. munkája nyomán

  • Umm al-Quran: A Korán Anyja
  • Umm al-Kitab: A Könyv Anyja.
  • Sab’ul Mathani: A hét leggyakrabban idézett vers. Ezzel nyit minden imaszakasz (rakaa). Allah így szól a Koránban: „S bizony, Mi megadtuk néked a hét „Muthanit” (a hét leggyakrabban elmondott verset) és a Nagy Koránt” 15. Al Hijr Szúra 87. vers. Ez a Szúra hét versből áll.
  • Al-Hamd: Allah Dicsőítése
  • As-Salah: Az imára térő
  • Ash-Shifa: Gyógyír
  • Ar-Ruqya: Lelki vigasz
  • Asas al-Quran: A Korán fundamentuma.

A Szúra recitálásakor olyan, mintha a Túlvilágon lennénk.

Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi – Tafhim al-Qur’an – A Korán Jelentése c. munkája nyomán

A Próféta (béke reá) egyik legrégebbi kinyilatkoztatása.

The Virtues of Surah Al-Fatiha

There are a number of ahadith explaining to us the great virtue of this surah.

Allah responds to the believer when he recites Surah Al-Fatiah

Sahih Muslim records on the authority of Abu Hurayrah (companion of prophet)) who said that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said,

“Allah, the Glorious and Exalted said, “I have divided the prayer between Myself and my servant equally and My servant shall be granted what he asked for. Therefore, when the servant says, ‘Praise be to Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the worlds’, Allah says, ‘My servant has praised Me.’ When he says, ’Most Gracious, Most Merciful,’ Allah says, ‘My servant has extolled Me.’ When he says, ‘Master of the Day of Judgment,’ Allah says, ‘My servant has glorified Me.’ When he says, ‘Thee do we worship, and Thine aid we seek,’ Allah says, ‘this is between Me and My servant and My servant shall have what he requested.’ When he says, ‘Show us the straight way, the way of those on whom Thou hast bestowed Thy Grace, those whose (portion) is not wrath, and who go not astray,’ Allah says, ‘this is for My servant and My servant shall have what he asked for.'”

Ahmad records on the authority of Abu Hurayrah who said (in part of the hadith) that “The Prophet (peace upon be him) called Ubayy ibn Ka’b and told him that:

“…Would you like me to teach you a Surah the likes of which is not to be found in the Tawrah, Injil, Zabur [6] or the (rest of the) Quran?” He said, “Yes O Messenger of Allah”‘ The Prophet (peace upon be him) said, ‘I hope that I will not leave this door until you know it.’

“Ubayy said, ‘Then he took hold of my hand and talked to me while I slowed down fearing that we may reach the door before he finished talking. When we did reach it I asked him, ‘What is the Surah you promised me, O Messenger of Allah?’ He said, “What is the Surah you recite in prayer?” So I recited the Mother of the Quran upon which he said, ‘By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, Allah has not revealed the likes of it in the Torah, Injil, Zabur or the [rest of the] Quran. It is the Seven Oft-Repeated verses.'”

Surah Al-Fatiha part of the two lights given to the prophet (s)

Sahih Muslim records on the authority of Ibn Abbas who said:

“While the Messenger of Allah (peace upon be him) was sitting with Jibril he heard a creaking sound above him. Jibril looked up and said, “This is [the sound of] a gate that has been opened in heaven today and has never been previously opened.” Then an Angel descended through it and came to the Prophet (peace upon be him) and said, ‘Rejoice in the good news of two lights that have been given to you such as no prophet before you has been given. [They are] Surah Al-Fatihah and the concluding [two] verses of Surah Al-Baqarah. You will never recite a word from them without being given the blessings they contain.’

A Fatiha Szúra belső értékei

Számos prófétai hagyomány, Hadisz magyarázza a Fatiha Szúra belső értékeit.

A Fatiha Szúra egyike a két világosságnak, melyeket a Próféta kapott

Muszlim Szahih gyűjteményében ibn Abbas-ra hivatkozva a következő említést teszi:

[1] Worlds are in plural. Allah, the Creator has established the whole Universe what is not discovered and is not possible to discover as whole because they are endless. Therefore Quran is using Worlds instead of World. We don’t know how many Worlds are there. In order to discover Allah we must invest efforts to study and discover His creation. The more human discovers from Universe the more we can see His perfection and Omnipotence. The other explanation is spiritual. There is a physical World and a spiritual one what we cannot see with our equipment or senses. In order to discover it we must use our hearts and belief. We have to open our third eye what is inside our bosom. Without the sense to see with heart (Basira) we don’t understand the logic of Creation and our place in it.Also there is a World what we see and there is an invisible one. In between the two there is a “Hijab”, a veil. Only Allah, the Almighty can provide passage between Seen and Unseen with revelations and inspiration.Any meaning of World comes into our understanding or senses there is Allah behind all.

[1] A Világok szó többes számban fordul elő.

[2] Day of Judgement is the Day when all human will be judged according to their wills, intentions and deeds. In Islam intention and will is more important than deeds because there is not evil action without evil intention however evil deeds can be committed even ignorantly or coincidentally. Therefore Fitna, temptation intrigue or perturbation is worse than killing or other deeds. Because even killing cannot happen without Fitna as motivation for committing the sin.The Almighty Allah doesn’t care whether we are white or black, male or female, which ethnic group we belong to or which political party we are affiliated. In the Day of Judgement there is no special Entrance for Russians or Americans, Gypsies or Danish, democrats or republicans. Only our spirit is standing there to be judged according to our intentions and deeds.

[3] The worship is a way to Him. Referring back to the bad intentions and deeds or discovering His Worlds and Creation or finding our place in the Universe, worship shows the way where Allah is our only place to find our rest.

[4] The Straight way or path which is narrow as the edge of a sword and the fire of hell is around. Only those can enter the Heaven who can pass on this very narrow path till they reach. This is a wonderful metaphor what gives hope for good reward with the guidance of Allah while evil tries by all means to mislead all of us.

[5] Which path or way Allah is speaking about? Who can pass safely on this narrow line? There are two groups of people who cannot move on this way. There are those who do strictly against the commandments of Allah. They are those who make Allah bring His wrath forth and make Him cracking down to people. They are the ones who transgress the laws of Allah after their covenant with Him, or the ones who prevent the occurrence of the issues which Allah has predestinated and those who abuse the world. These three types of people always cause Allah to change the world with His punishment. We can find a lot of evidences about that in the history. The second group are those who go astray. Allah sends His guidance in every era and place. He gives ayas (symbols of His existence) in every minute. He has sent His messengers with His Scriptures but mankind is blind. Majority of them is always going astray. Willingly or unwillingly they change the meaning of Scriptures and instead of Him, they follow those fellows who are only using humans and taking benefit out of them. These two groups of people will never reach to Heaven. Some interpreters identify the first group as Jews and the other as Christians. Allah is the best knower whether they are right. My opinion is that this Surah doesn’t go down to the dimension of humans on specific level. It gives general signs for mankind without specifying an ethnic or religious group. Everybody can be involved into both group of these people irrespectively of our external appearance or statements. However our internal content is more important.

A történelemben számos példát látunk erre.

A másik csoport az, aki eltévelyeg. Allah minden korban és helyen útmutatást ad. Ayakat (létére utaló szimbólumokat) is lebocsát minden pillanatban.

Allah a Legjobb Tudója, vajon igazuk van-e? Azonban a belső tartalom ennél fontosabb.

[6] Zabur: according to Islam, the holy book of Dawud (David), one of the holy books revealed by Allah before the Quran, alongside others such as the Tawrat (Torah) of Musa (Moses) and the Injil (Gospel) of Jesus (Jesus).
