Introduction to Surah AN-NAJM (THE STAR) with Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi- Tafhim al-Qur'an - The Meaning of the Qur'an

Name

The surah derives its name from the very first word wan Najm. This title also does not relate to the subject matter, but is a name given to the Surah as a symbol.

Period of Revelation and Historical Background

According to a Tradition related by Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Da’ud and Nasai, on the authority of Hadrat Abdullah bin Mas’ud, the first Surah in which a verse requiring the performance of a sajdah (prostration) as sent down, is Surah An-Najm. The parts of this Hadith which have been reported by Aswad bin Yazid, Abu Ishaq and Zubair bin Mu’awiyah from Hadrat Ibn Mas’ud, indicate that this is the first Surah of the Qur’an, which the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had publicly recited before an assembly of the Quraish (and according to Ibn Marduyah, in the Ka’bah) in which both the believers and the disbelievers were present. At the end, when he recited the verse requiring the performance of a sajdah and fell down in prostration, the whole assembly also fall down in prostration with him, and even those chiefs of the polytheists who were in the forefront of the opposition to the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) could not resist falling down in prostration. Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says that he saw only one man, Umayyah bin Khalaf, from among the disbelievers, who did not fall down in prostration but took a little dust and rubbing it on his forehead said that that was enough for him. Later, as Ibn Mas’ud relates, he saw this man die in the state of disbelief.

Ibn Sad says that before this, in the Rajab of the 5th year of Prophethood, a small group of the Companions had emigrated to Abyssinia. Then, when in the Ramadan of the same year this incident took place the news spread that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had recited Surah An-Najm publicly in the assembly of the Quraish and the whole assembly, including the believers as well as the disbelievers, had fallen down in prostration with him. When the emigrants to Abyssinia heard this news they formed the impression that the disbelievers of Makkah had become Muslims. Thereupon, some of them returned to Makkah in the Shawwal of the 5th year of Prophethood, only to learn that the news was wrong and the conflict between Islam and disbelief was raging as furiously as before. Consequently, the second emigration to Abyssinia took place, in which many more people left Makkah.

Thus, it becomes almost certain that this Surah was revealed in the Ramadan of 5th year of Prophethood.

Bevezetés az AN-NAJM (CSILLAG) szúrához Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi - Tafhim al-Qur'an - A Korán Jelentése című munkája nyomán

A Prófécia 5.

(53 : 13)

(53 : 16)
16. Behold, the Lote-tree was shrouded (in mystery unspeakable!)

16. Mikor a lótuszfa homályba burkolózott,

(53 : 17)
17. (His) sight never swerved, nor did it go wrong!

(53 : 18)

18. Mert ő Ura Jelei közül a Legnagyobbat látta!

(53 : 19)
19. Have ye seen Lat. and ‘Uzza [9],

19. Láttátok-e Látot és Uzzát [9],

(53 : 20)
20. And another, the third (goddess), Manat?

20. És egy másik (istenséget), Manatot?

(53 : 21)
21. What! for you the male sex, and for Him, the female [10]?

21. Tán nektek jár a hím és Neki a női nem [10]?

(53 : 22)
22. Behold, such would be indeed a division most unfair!

22. Ez a felosztás, bizony a legigazságtalanabb!

(53 : 23)
23. These are nothing but names which ye have devised,- ye and your fathers,- for which Allah has sent down no authority (whatever). They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own souls desire!- Even though there has already come to them Guidance from their Lord [11]!

(53 : 24)
24. Nay, shall man have (just) anything he hankers after [12]?

(53 : 25)
25. But it is to Allah that the End and the Beginning (of all things) belong.

(53 : 26)
26. How many-so-ever be the angels in the heavens, their intercession will avail nothing except after Allah has given leave for whom He pleases and that he is acceptable to Him [13].

(53 : 27)
27. Those who believe not in the Hereafter, name the angels with female names [14].

(53 : 28)
28. But they have no knowledge therein. They follow nothing but conjecture; and conjecture avails nothing against Truth.

(53 : 29)
29. Therefore shun those who turn away from Our Message and desire nothing but the life of this world.

(53 : 30)
30. That is as far as knowledge will reach them. Verily thy Lord knoweth best those who stray from His Path, and He knoweth best those who receive guidance [15].

(53 : 31)
31. Yea, to Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and on earth: so that He rewards those who do evil, according to their deeds, and He rewards those who do good, with what is best [16].

(53 : 32)
32. Those who avoid great sins and shameful deeds, only (falling into) small faults,- verily thy Lord is ample in forgiveness. He knows you well when He brings you out of the earth, And when ye are hidden in your mothers’ wombs. Therefore justify not yourselves: He knows best who it is that guards against evil [17].

(53 : 33)
33. Seest thou one who turns back [18],

33. Látod-e azt, ki hátrafordul [18],

(53 : 34)
34. Gives a little, then hardens (his heart)?

34. Ad egy keveset, de megkeményedik (szíve)?

(53 : 35)
35. What! Has he knowledge of the Unseen so that he can see [19]?

35. Nála tán a Láthatatlan tudása, amit ő lát [19]?

(53 : 36)
36. Nay, is he not acquainted with what is in the Books of Moses-

(53 : 37)
37. And of Abraham who fulfilled his engagements?-

37. És Ábrahámról, ki hűen ellátta (küldetését)?-

(53 : 38)
38. Namely, that no bearer of burdens can bear the burden of another [20];

(53 : 39)
39. That man can have nothing but what he strives for;

(53 : 40)
40. That (the fruit of) his striving will soon come in sight [21]:

40. Hogy igyekezetének (gyümölcsét) meg fogja látni [21],

(53 : 41)
41. Then will he be rewarded with a reward complete;

(53 : 42)
42. That to thy Lord is the final Goal [22];

42. Hogy Uradnál van a Végső Cél [22],

(53 : 43)
43. That it is He Who granteth Laughter and Tears;

(53 : 44)
44. That it is He Who granteth Death and Life;

[1] Najm is interpreted in various ways. As most commonly accepted, it means either a Star generically, or the close cluster of seven stars known as the Pleiades in the Constellation Taurus, which the sun enters about the 21st of April every year.

Hawa in the text may mean either “goes down (or sets)” or “rises”. Whichever meaning we take, it makes no difference to the interpretation given above.

[1] „Nadzsm” többféle módon fordítható. A legáltalánosabb jelentése Csillag.

[2] “Your Companion” is the holy Prophet Muhammad, who had lived among the Quraish. He is defended from three kinds of charges that the Unbelievers brought against him: • that he was going astray, either through defect of intelligence or through carelessness; • that he was being misled or deceived by evil spirits; and • that he spoke out of a whim or impulse, or from a selfish desire to impress his own personality.

[3] This is referred by the Commentators to the angel Gabriel, through whom the inspiration came. Cf. 81:20.

[4] Gabriel appeared in stately form, perhaps towering above the Mountains of Light.

[4] Gábriel tekintélyes alakban jelent meg, talán a Ghar Hira (Világosság Barlangja) fölé magasodva.

[5] “Heart” in Arabic includes the faculty of intelligence as well as the faculty of feeling. The impression conveyed was pure truth; there was no illusion in it.

[6] The first occasion when Gabriel appeared in a visible form was at the Mountain of Light, when he brought his first revelation beginning with Iqra’; The second was at the Prophet’s Miraj or Ascension. These were the only two occasions when Gabriel appeared in visible form.

[6] Első alkalommal Gábriel látható módon a Gar Hiránál (Világosság Barlangjánál) jelent meg, amikor a legelső kinyilatkoztatásokat elhozta: „Iqra”, azaz Olvass, kezdettel.

[7] For the Lote-tree in its literal meaning, see 34:16. The wild Lote (Zizyphus Spina-Christi) is thorny; under cultivation it yields good fruit and shade, and is symbolic of heavenly bliss, as here and in 56:28.

[7] A lótuszfa még itt 34:16. A vad Lótuszfa (Zizyphus Spina-Christi) tövises, termelésbe véve ízletes gyümölcsöt és árnyékot ad. Az Égi áldás szimbolikus megtestesítője. 56:28-ban szintén.

[8] The “Garden of Abode” (Jannat al-Mawa) lies close to the Lote-Tree and, in the opinion of some authorities, is so called because the souls of believers will find their abode therein.

[8] „Kertek Hajléka” a Lótuszfa közelében van, néhány tudós véleménye szerint itt találnak hajlékra a hívő lelkek.

[9] The three principal idols of Pagan Arab Idolatry were the goddesses • Lat, • Uzza, and • Manat.

[9] A Pogány Arab bálványok három főistenségei voltak: Lat, Uzza és Manat.

[10] To show Allah in human shape, or imagine sons or daughters of Allah, as if Allah were flesh, was in any case a derogation from the supreme glory of Allah, high above all creatures, even if the human shapes were invested with great beauty and majesty as in the Greek Pantheon. But when we consider in what low opinion Pagan Arabia held the female sex, it was particularly degrading to show Allah, or so-called daughters of Allah, in female shapes. Cf. 16:57-59, and also 52:39,

[10] Allahot emberi alakban mutatni, Neki fiakat, lányokat tulajdonítani, mintha Ő hús és vér teremtmény lenne, az Ő Dicsőségének megbecstelenítését, megalázását jelenti. Allah messze fölötte áll mindennek még akkor is, ha a Neki tulajdonított emberi megjelenítés a Görög Panteonok mintájára a tökéletességet próbálja megmintázni. De ha ráadásul ismerjük a Pogány Arab világ női nemhez, azon belül született lányaikhoz való emberietlen, megalázó viszonyát, akkor az Allahnak betudott leánygyermekek Őt a lehető legmélyebbre degradálják. 16:57-59 és 52:39.

[11] Cf. 7:71; and 12:40. The divine names which they give to stocks and stones, or to heroes living or dead, or even to prophets and men of God, are but the creations of their own fancy. Whatever they were, they were not gods.

[11] 7:71 és 12:40. Általuk kreált istenneveket adtak állatoknak, bálványoknak, hősöknek, kik éltek, vagy már meghaltak, prófétáknak, Isten embereinek. Akárkiknek is adták a neveket, nem voltak istenek.

[12] The unpurified desires of men’s hearts often lead to destruction, for they are dictated by Evil. The true source of guidance and light is Allah, just as He is also the goal to which all persons and things-all existence returns.

[13] We are apt to imagine the angelic host of heaven as beings of immense power. But their power is all derived from Allah. Men, when they attain to the highest spiritual dignities, may have even more power and position than angels in the sight of Allah, as in typified by angels being hidden to bow down to Adam: 2:34. The Quraish superstition about angels being intermediaries and intercessors for man with Allah is condemned.

[14] Cf. 53:21. The Pagan Quraish had no firm belief in the Hereafter. Their prayers for intercession to angels and deities was on account of their worldly affairs.

[14] 53:21 feljebb.

[15] Men with a materialist turn of mind, whose desires are bounded by sex and material things, will not go beyond those things. Their knowledge will be limited to the narrow circle in which their thoughts move. The spiritual world is beyond their ken. While persons with a spiritual outlook, even though they may fail again and again in attaining their full ideals, are on the right Path. They are willing to receive guidance and Allah’s Grace will find them out and help them.

A spirituális világ kívül esik azon a téren, amit be tudnak látni.

[16] All deeds have their consequences, good or ill. Allah does not sit apart. He governs the world. And Mercy as well as Justice are His attributes. In His Justice every deed or word or thought of evil has its consequence for the doer or speaker or thinker. But there is always in this life room for repentance and amendment. As soon as this is forthcoming, Allah’s Mercy comes into action. It can blot out our evil, and the “reward” which it gives is nearly always greater than our merits.

[17] As Allah knows our inmost being, it is absurd for us to justify ourselves either by pretending that we are better than we are or by finding excuses for our conduct.

[17] Mivel Allah jól ismeri legbensőbb valónkat, fölösleges önmagunkat Előtte jobbnak bizonygatni annál, mint akik vagyunk, vagy állandóan kifogást keresni tetteinkre.

[18] The particular reference in this passage, according to Baidhawi is to Walid ibn Mugaira, who bargained with a Quraish Pagan for a certain sum if the latter would take upon himself the sins of Walid. He paid a part of the sum but withheld the rest. The general application that concerns us is threefold: • if we accept Islam, we must accept it wholeheartedly and not look back to Pagan superstitions; • we cannot play fast and loose with our promises and, • no man can bargain about spiritual matters for he cannot see what his end will be.

3. Senki sem tehet spirituális ügyeket alku tárgyává, hiszen ezek végkimenetelét csak Allah látja be.

[19] So that he can see what will happen in the Hereafter’: for no bargains can be struck about matters unknown.

[19] Senki sem tehet alku tárgyává ügyeket, melyek tere a Láthatatlan Világban van.

[20] Here follows a series of eleven aphorisms. • The first is that a man’s spiritual burden-the responsibility for his sin must be borne by himself and not by another: Cf. 6:164.

[21] The second and third aphorisms are that • man must strive, or he will gain nothing; • and that if he strives, the result must soon appear in sight and he will find his reward in full measure.

[22] The fourth, fifth, and sixth aphorisms are that • all things return to Allah; • that all our hope should be in Him; • and we should fear none but Him: and that He alone can give Life and Death.

[23] The seventh aphorism relates to sex: • all things are created in pairs: each sex performs its proper function, and yet its wonderful working is part of the creative process of Allah: the living seed fructifies, but contains within itself all the factors disclosed in its later development and life.

[24] No less wonderful is the promise He has made about the raising of the dead, and a new life in the Hereafter, and this is the subject of the eighth aphorism.

[24] A nyolcadik aforizma Allah ígéretéről a holt életre keltéséről, a Túlvilági Feltámadásról szól.

[25] Wealth and material gain are sought by most men, in the hope that they will be a source of enjoyment and satisfaction. But this hope is not always fulfilled. There is a physical and spiritual side to it. But both the material and the spiritual side depend upon the working of Allah’s Plan. This is referred to in the ninth aphorism.

[26] The tenth aphorism • refers to a mighty phenomenon of nature, the magnificent star Sirius, which is such a prominent object in the skies, in the early part of the solar year, say, from January to April. It is the brightest star in the firmament, and its bluish light causes wonder and terror in Pagan minds. The Pagan Arabs worshipped it as a divinity.

[27] The eleventh and last aphorism • refers to the punishment of the most powerful ancient peoples for their sins.

[27] A tizenegyedik, egyben utolsó aforizma a leghatalmasabb elődök büntetéséről szól, melyet bűneik miatt nyertek el.

[28] With a slight modification this forms the refrain of the next Surah but one, the highly artistic Surah of Rahman. In Surah 54:15, 17 etc., there is a similar refrain in different words. Every gift and benefit you have is from Allah.

[29] The Prophet before the Quraish (and before us) continues the line of messengers of Allah who have come to teach mankind and lead men into unity and righteousness. Shall we not listen to his voice? Every day that passes, the Judgment approaches nearer and nearer. But Allah alone can say at what precise hour it will come to any of us.

[29] A Próféta azoknak a Prófétáknak a sorát zárja le, akik előtte Allah Üzenetét saját népeiknek elhozták, köztük tanították az embereket az igazságra, egyenességre, összefogásra, egységre. Nekünk mind hallgatnunk kell rá. Minden nappal közelebb kerülünk a Végítélethez. Csak Allah egyedül tudja ennek valós idejét.

[30] And so we are invited to prostrate ourselves and adore Him. For this is the true end of Revelation and the true attitude when we understand the world, Nature, History and the working of Allah’s Plan.
